LUKANIN SERIES

The Lukanin series consists of very deep, well-drained soils formed in eolian sands. Lukanin soils are on stabilized sand dunes on beach terraces and plains. Slopes range from 0 to 70 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 35 degrees F. and the average annual precipitation is about 24 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Mixed Typic Cryopsamments

TYPICAL PEDON: Lukanin sand - under forbs and grass vegetation at 50 feet elevation (16 m). (All colors are for moist soil)

Oe--0 to 0.5 inches (0 to 1 cm); dark brown (10YR 3/3) peat; few fine and medium roots; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

A--0.5 to 3 inches (1 to 7 cm); very dark brown (10YR 2/2) sand; single grain structure; loose; non-sticky and non-plastic; few fine and medium roots; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick)

C1--3 to 51 inches (7 to 130 cm); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) sand; single grain structure; loose; non-sticky and non-plastic; many fine and medium roots; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear smooth boundary. (20 to 50 inches thick)

C2--51 to 59 inches (130 to 150 cm); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) sand; single grain structure; loose; non-sticky and non-plastic; few fine roots; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 15 inches thick)

C3--59 to 79 inches (150 to 200 cm); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loamy sand; single grain structure; loose; non-sticky and non-plastic; slightly acid (pH 6.3). (10 to 30 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Saint Paul Island Alaska; UTM Zone 2, 544978 E and 6333590 N.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the organic mat ranges from 0.5 to 2 inches. The weighted average particle size of the control section is sand with less than 50 percent very fine sand. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to neutral in the profile.

The A horizon, when present, has hue of 7.5YR, 10YR, or 2.5Y; value moist of 2 or 2.5, and chroma moist of 1 or 2.

The C horizons have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR; value moist of 2, 2.5 or 3 and chroma moist of 1 or 2. Thin strata and lenses of silt loam or sandy loam are present in some pedons.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Kunayosh, Mysten, Skagway, Teklanika, Witefels, and Temo series. Kunayosh soils have O horizons composed of forest litter, 5GY hue in the C horizon, and precipitation greater than 80 inches. Mysten soils are gravelly in the control section. Skagway soils are somewhat poorly drained and are calcareous in the control section. Teklanika soils have hue of 2.5Y in the C horizons and MAST less than 32 degrees. Witefels soils have a paralithic contact between 20 to 40 inches. Temo soils are in the sahllow family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lukanin soils formed in dunes along beach terraces and plains adjacent to the coast. The climate is cold maritime. Mean annual temperature is 35 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation ranges from 19 to 28 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Polovina series on plains and the Bogoslof series on terraces on plains. Tsammana series occur on nearby beach terraces and dipslopes

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Slow to moderate runoff. Permeability is rapid to very rapid in the sandy material.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly in grass and forbs dominated by dunegrass (Elymus arenarius), Nootka lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis), and wild celery (Angelica lucida).

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Saint Paul Island, Alaska. The series is of limited extent.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: WASILLA, ALASKA

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Saint Paul Island, Alaska, 2000.

REMARKS: Diagnostic layers and features recognized in this profile include: An ochric epipedon, a cryic temperature regime, and a weighted average particle size of sand from 10 to 40 inches.
