A--0 to 3 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) sand; single grain; loose; many fine roots; very strongly acid; clear boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)
E--3 to 15 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) sand; single grain; loose; few quartzose pebbles; very strongly acid; abrupt irregular boundary. (6 to 24 inches thick)
Bh--15 to 18 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) loamy sand; single grain; loose; 5 percent, by volume, firm irregular nodules up to 2 inches in diameter; very strongly acid; clear irregular boundary roughly concentric with the overlying boundary. (1 to 10 inches thick)
BC--18 to 36 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) sand; single grain; loose; few firm nodules; common medium faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions in lower part; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 24 inches thick)
C--36 to 65 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) sand; single grain; loose; very strongly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Burlington County, New Jersey; Camp Lenape Boy Scout Reservation, 1.5 miles south of Tuckerton Road on Jackson Road just south of the lake on east side of road, in woods; USGS topographic quadrangle; lat. 39 degrees 50 minutes 13 seconds N. and long. 74 degrees 50 minutes 00 seconds W. NAD83
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Solum Thickness: 30 to 50 inches

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
Lakewood soils--excessively drained with a seasonal high water table below 60 inches, on slightly higher landforms
Atsion soils--poorly drained with a seasonal high water table above 12 inches, on slightly lower-lying positions
Berryland soils--very poorly drained with a seasonal high water table above 6 inches, on lower-lying positions
Woodmansie soils--well drained and have a coarse-loamy particle-size control section, on slightly higher lying landforms
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage Class (Agricultural): Moderately well drained
USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly woodland. Acres once farmed have now been abandoned. Wooded areas are dominantly pitch pine, shortleaf pine, black, and white oak, with an understory of lowbush blueberries and scrub oak. Where wildfires have been severe, pitch pine and black jack oak are dominant.

REMARKS: The Lakehurst series was previously classified as Entic Haplorthods. These soils typically have a Bh horizon less than 4 inches thick or if the horizon is more than 4 inches, it fails either the physical or chemical properties defined for spodic materials.
Diagnostic horizons and other diagnostic soil characteristics recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon--the zone from the soil surface to a depth of 3 inches (A horizon)
Albic horizon--the zone from 3 to 15 inches (E horizon)
Spodic horizon--the zone from 15 to 18 inches (Bh horizon)
Aquic conditions--the zone from 18 inches to a depth of 80 inches is periodically saturated (endosaturation)
