LASH SERIES
The Lash series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium on flood plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 914 mm (36 inches), and mean annual temperature is about 10.0 degrees C (50 degrees F).
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Fluventic Hapludolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Lash silt loam, on a nearly level slope in a cultivated field at an elevation of about 155 meters (510 feet) above mean sea level. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Ap--0 to 25 cm (10 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; moderate medium granular structure; friable; many very fine roots; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.
A--25 to 36 cm (10 to 14 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common very fine roots; many very fine vesicular pores; about 30 percent fine and medium sand; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the A horizon is 25 to 58 cm (10 to 23 inches).]
Bw1--36 to 79 cm (14 to 31 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) silt loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine roots; many very fine vesicular pores; many distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) organic coatings on faces of peds; about 35 percent fine and medium sand; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary.
Bw2--79 to 132 cm (31 to 52 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; many very fine tubular pores; common distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) organic coatings on faces of peds; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. [Combined thickness of the Bw horizon is 43 to 127 cm (17 to 50 inches).]
2C--132 to 152 cm 52 to 60 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) loamy sand; single grain; very friable; common very fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.
TYPE LOCATION: Tippecanoe County, Indiana; 4 miles south of Montmorenci; 630 feet west and 1,500 feet south of the northeast corner of sec. 25, T. 23 N., R. 6 W.; USGS Otterbein, Ind. topographic quadrangle; lat. 40 degrees 24 minutes 45 seconds N. and long. 87 degrees 2 minutes 17 seconds W., NAD 27; UTM Zone 16, 496771 easting and 4473546 northing, NAD 83.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Landes series. Landes soils do not have carbonates in all parts of the series control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lash soils are on flood plains in areas of Wisconsinan glaciation. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Lash soils formed in calcareous alluvium. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 889 to 1016 mm (35 to 40 inches). Mean annual temperature ranges from 10.0 to 11.1 degrees C (50 to 52 degrees F). Frost-free period is 150 to 180 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Battleground,
Ouiatenon, and
Ross soils. The well drained Battleground soils have more clay and less sand in the particle-size control section and are on higher flood-plain steps. The somewhat excessively drained Ouiatenon soils are on natural levees or on higher flood-plain steps. The well drained Ross soils do not have carbonates in the solum and are on higher flood-plain steps.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained. Potential for surface runoff is negligible or very low. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high or high in the solum and high or very high in the underlying material. Permeability is moderately rapid in the solum and rapid in the underlying material.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are used to grow corn and soybeans. A few areas are used for hayland, pasture, or woodland. Native vegetation is deciduous forest.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 111D in central Indiana. The series is of small extent.
