MARUMSCO SERIES

Soils of the Marumsco series are very deep, and moderately well and somewhat poorly drained. They formed in stratified marine sediments of the low Coastal Plain Terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 4 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 40 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 59 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Aquic Hapludults

TYPICAL PEDON: Marumsco loam 2 percent slope in a mixed hardwood forest. (Colors are from moist soil).

Oi--0 to 2 inches; partially decomposed, hardwood leaves and twigs.

A--2 to 3 inch; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loam; moderate fine granular structure; very friable; none sticky, none plastic; many fine, medium and coarse roots; few fine mica flakes; 1 percent rounded quartz gravel; extremely acid; clear smooth boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick).

E--3 to 9 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam; moderate fine granular structure; very friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many fine, medium and coarse roots; few fine mica flakes; 1 percent rounded quartz gravel; extremely acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick).

Bt1--9 to 12 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) clay loam; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly plastic, slightly sticky; common fine and medium roots; 1 percent rounded quartz gravel; few fine mica flakes common distinct clay films; extremely acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--12 to 31 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) clay; common medium distinct light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) and gray (10YR 5/1) mottles; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; firm, plastic and sticky; common fine and medium roots; many distinct and prominent clay films; few fine mica flakes; 1 percent rounded quartz gravel; extremely acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Btg--31 to 49 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) sandy clay loam; many medium and coarse distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) and prominent reddish yellow (7.5YR 7/8) mottles; moderate coarse prismatic structure; firm in place; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many distinct and prominent clay films and coatings on ped faces; few fine mica flakes; 1 percent rounded quartz gravel; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the B horizon ranges from 30 to 50 inches).

Cg--49 to 77 inches; gray (10YR 6/1); sandy clay loam; common medium and coarse distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) mottles; structureless; very friable to firm; (consists of stratified sand to clay): few fine mica flakes; 3 percent rounded quartz gravel; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Prince William County, Virginia; about 100 feet south of VA-633 and about 2 1/2 miles east of US Route 1 at Dumfries.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 40 to 60 inches. Depth to bedrock is more than 20 feet. Rock fragments of rounded quartz gravel range from 1 to 5 percent in the solum and 1 to 15 percent in the C horizon. Reaction is extremely acid or very strongly acid unless limed.

The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 or 4 and chroma of 0 through 2. Texture of the A horizon is sandy loam, fine sandy loam or loam. The E horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6 and chroma of 2 through 4. Texture of the E horizon is sandy loam, fine sandy loam or loam.

The Bt and Btg horizons have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 4 through 8 in the upper part and 1 through 3 in the lower part. Texture is clay loam, sandy clay loam or clay.

The C horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y value of 5 through 7 and chroma of 1 or 2 or the soil is neutral. The C horizon is stratified sediments that range from sand to clay.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in this family. Closely related series are the Cruze, Grassland, Halifax, Keyport, Lackstown, Latham, and Zoar soils with mixed mineralogy.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Marumsco soils are on level to gently sloping low Coastal Plain terraces. These soils developed in stratified marine sediments of sand, silt and clay that contain a relatively high content of feldspar. These soils are commonly at elevations from about 5 to 30 feet above sea level. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 38 to 44 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 57 to 60 degree F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These soils are associated dominately with the Lunt and Dumfries series. The Lunt soils have a base saturation of more than 35 percent. The Dumfries soils have 18 to 40 inch Solum and are fine-loamy.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well and somewhat poorly drained; slow runoff; and slow permeability in the subsoil layer.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of the acreage is in hardwood and pine forest. Some areas are used for urban development. Small areas are used for the general crops or are idle land.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Virginia; possibly Maryland. MLRA 149A. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Morgantown, West Virginia

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Prince William County, Virginia 1983.

REMARKS: This soil was previously mapped as Keyport, Lenoir and Mattapex. It is classified on the basis of lab data from Va. Tech

03/2022 revision: Oi had 2 to 0 inch depths, corrected to be 0 to 2 in horizon depths then added 2 inches to all horizon depths throughout the typical pedon. WJN

2003 Previously revised by JHE-DDR in 02/1997. This 2003 revision changes the classification from thermic to mesic and from clayey to fine.
