MARVELL SERIES

The Marvell series is a member of the coarse-loamy, mixed, thermic family of Typic Hapludalfs. These soils have upper horizons of brownish medium acid fine sandy loam about 36 inches thick over 11B horizons of medium acid yellowish brown mottled silt loam.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, active, thermic Typic Hapludalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Marvell fine sandy loam - cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 6 inches; Brown (10YR 4/3) fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; few fine black concretions; medium acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 8 inches thick)

A1--6 to 15 inches; Dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; few fine black concretions; medium acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick).

B11--15 to 25 inches; Yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) fine sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common fine roots; few patches of pale brown (10YR 6/3) clean sand grains; medium acid; clear smooth boundary. (8 to 18 inches thick)

B12--25 to 36 inches; Brown (10YR 5/3) fine sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; common fine pale brown patches of clean sand grains; common fine black concretions; medium acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (7 to 14 inches thick)

11B21t--36 to 48 inches; Yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam; common fine distinct light gray mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; firm; patchy clay films in pores and on faces of peds; common fine pores; many fine black concretions; medium acid; gradual smooth boundary. (6 to 17 inches thick)

11B22tg--48 to 60 inches; Light gray (10YR 7/2) silt loam; common fine distinct yellowish brown mottles; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; patchy clay films on faces of peds and in pores; common fine pores, many fine black concretions; medium acid; clear smooth boundary.

TYPE LOCATION: Phillips County, Arkansas; about 2 miles south of Marvell, 1/2-mile south from Marvell on Arkansas Highway 1, then 2 miles on gravel road, SW1/4SW1/4SW1/4 sec. 8, T. 2 S., R. 2 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The solum is 60 to more than 80 inches thick. A11 horizons range from very strongly acid to medium acid except when the soil has been limed. The A horizon is dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), brown (10YR 5/3, 4/3; 7.5YR 4/4), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), or dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4). It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam. The B1 horizon is yellowish brown (10YR 5/4, 5/6), brown (10YR 5/3; 7.5YR 4/4), or dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4). It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam. Some pedons have thin strata or subhorizons that are loamy fine sand and very fine sandy loam. The 11B horizon is yellowish brown (10YR 5/4, 5/6) mottled with shades of gray; or light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) or light gray (10YR 6/1, 7/1, 7/2) mottled with shades of brown.

COMPETING SERIES: These include the Dubbs, Gallion, Goldman, Lagrange, Memphis, Rilla, Sterlington, and Tutwiler series. Except for Lagrange soils none of these soils has lithologic discontinuity between the upper and lower B horizons. The Dubbs, Gallion, Memphis, and Rilla soils have between 18 and 35 percent clay in the control section. Goldman and Lagrange soils have mottles of chroma 2 in the upper part of the B horizon and within 20 inches of the surface. Sterlington soils have yellowish red colors within the B horizon.

SETTING: Marvell soils are on nearly level and gently sloping and undulating terraces and natural levees. Gradients are 0 to 3 percent. The soil formed in thin coarse-loamy alluvial deposits over silty materials. Near the type location, average annual temperature is about 62 degrees F.; average annual precipitation is about 51 inches.

PRINCIPAL ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Beulah, Calloway, Dundee, Grenada, and Lagrange soils. Beulah soils are on adjoining areas that have thick fine sandy loam deposits. Calloway, Dundee, and Grenada soils are on adjoining higher areas and lack the fine sandy loam A horizon. Lagrange soils are on depressions and lower flood plain positions and have grayer colors.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cleared and used for production of cotton and soybeans. Native vegetation is mixed hardwood forest of cottonwood, pecan, oak, sycamore, gum, and elm.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East Arkansas, possibly Louisiana, Missouri and Mississippi. The series is of small extent with about 5,000 acres in Arkansas.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: AUBURN, ALABAMA

REMARKS: Marvell soils formerly were included in the Beulah series and classified in the Alluvial great soil group.
