MATHIS SERIES
The Mathis series consists of moderately deep to bedrock, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in residuum from sandstone. The Mathis soils are on mountain slopes. Slope ranges from 20 to 50 percent. The mean annual air temperature is about 54 degrees F (12.2 degrees C), and the mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches (330 mm).
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy-skeletal, mixed, mesic Ustic Torriorthents
TYPICAL PEDON: Mathis very stony loamy fine sand - rangeland (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A1--0 to 4 inches (0 to 10 cm); reddish brown (5YR 5/4) very stony loamy fine sand, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium granular structure; loose; common fine and medium roots; 25 percent gravel, cobbles and stones; slightly effervescent, carbonates are disseminated; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 7 inches or 5 to 18 cm thick)
A2--4 to 10 inches (10 to 25 cm); reddish brown (5YR 5/4) gravelly loamy fine sand, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; single grained; loose; common very fine and fine, and few medium roots; 25 percent gravel, cobbles and stones; strongly effervescent, carbonates are disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 6 inches or 0 to 15 cm thick)
C1--10 to 26 inches (25 to 66 cm); light reddish brown (2.5YR 6/4) very gravelly loamy sand, reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) moist; single grained; loose; common very fine and fine, and few medium roots; 50 percent gravel and cobbles; strongly effervescent, carbonates are disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); gradual wavy boundary. (6 to 23 inches or 15 to 58 cm thick)
C2--26 to 33 inches (66 to 84 cm); pink (5YR 7/4) very gravelly fine sand, reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) moist; single grained; loose; few fine and medium roots; 65 percent gravel and cobbles; strongly effervescent, carbonates are disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 15 inches or 0 to 38 cm thick)
R--33 inches (84 cm); sandstone bedrock.
TYPE LOCATION: Washington County, Utah; Scoggins Wash Area; near the west quarter corner of sec. 24, T.41 S., R.11 W; Springdale West Quadrangle; lat. 37 degrees 12 minutes 40 seconds N. and long. 113 degrees 3 minutes 18 seconds W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to bedrock: 21 to 40 inches (53 to 102 cm)
Surface rock fragments: 0 to 80 percent channers, flagstone, and stones
Rock fragments: 35 to 75 percent gravel, cobble, and stones
Mean annual soil temperature: 52 to 58 F (11.1 to 14.4 degrees C).
Mean summer soil temperature: 65 to 70 F (18.3 to 21.1 degrees C).
Soil moisture: The soils are usually dry during the period the soil temperature is above 41 F (5.0 degrees C). They are moist in some parts of the moisture control section for 30 to 40 days during the summer months and are dry for 70 to 85 days during the 120 days following the winter solstice. Ustic aridic moisture regime.
A horizons
Hue: 5YR, 2.5YR
Value: 4 or 5 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 3 to 6, dry or moist
Texture: dominantly very stony loamy fine sand but ranges to cobbly fine sandy loam
Reaction: slightly to moderately alkaline
Effervescence: noneffervescent to strongly effervescent.
C horizons
Hue: 2.5YR, 5YR, 7.5YR
Value: 4 to 8 dry, 4 to 6 moist
Chroma: 3 to 6, dry or moist
Texture: dominantly loamy fine sand and sand but some strata range to fine sandy loam.
Rock fragments: 35 to 75 percent cobbles and gravel, dominantly sandstone
Reaction: slightly to strongly alkaline
Effervescence: strongly effervescent
COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Calicott T(CO) and
Riovista (NM) series. Calicott and Riovista soils are very deep.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Mathis soils are on mountain slopes at elevations of 4,200 to 6,500 feet (1,280 to 1981 meters). Slopes range from 10 to 50 percent. These soils formed in residuum weathered from sandstone and in some areas a mixture of sandstone and shale. The average annual precipitation is 10 to 14 inches (254 to 356 mm). The mean annual air temperature is 50 to 56 F (10.0 to 13.3 degrees C)., and the mean summer temperature is 76 to 79 F(24 to 26.1 degrees C). The frost free period is 135 to 170 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Bond,
Clovis,
Naplene and
Palma soils. Bond soils have a lithic contact at depths less than 20 inches and have sandy clay loam argillic horizons. Naplene and Clovis soils are more than 40 inches deep to bedrock and lack rock fragments. Palma and Clovis soils have sandy clay loam argillic horizons, and Naplene soils have silt loam, silty clay loam or loam control sections.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; medium runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing, wildlife, and recreation. Native vegetation is pinyon, Juniper, sagebrush, yellowbrush, wheatgrass, Indian ricegrass, galleta, and black grama.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Utah. MLRA 35. These soils are moderately extensive.
