METIGOSHE SERIES


The Metigoshe series consists of deep, well drained soils that are shallow over sand and gravel. They formed in loamy alluvium underlain by sand and gravel alluvium on glacial outwash areas. The permeability is moderate over very rapid. Slopes range from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 39 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 25 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Alfic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Metigoshe coarse sandy loam - on a northeast facing slope of l0 percent under mixed hardwoods. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

0i--2 inches to 0; black (10YR 2/1) undecomposed leaves and twigs; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)

A--0 to 5 inches; black (10YR 2/1) coarse sandy loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)

E--5 to 8 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loamy coarse sand, pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure parting to weak medium granular; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and very fine roots; mildly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick)

Bt--8 to 11 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) coarse sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine and fine roots; interfingering of pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry E material throughout; common thin clay films on faces of peds; mildly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)

2BC--11 to 17 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) gravelly loamy coarse sand, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine roots; about 25 percent gravel; slight effervescence; mildly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

2C--17 to 60 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) gravelly coarse sand, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; about 30 percent gravel; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Bottineau County, North Dakota; near Lake Metigoshe; 2,450 feet west and l,800 feet north of the southeast, corner of sec. 27, T. l64 N., R. 75 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The depth to sand and gravel ranges from 10 to 18 inches. The mollic epipedon ranges from 7 to 11 inches thick.

The A horizon has color value of 2 or 3 and 3 or 4 dry. Some pedons have an Ap horizon of sandy loam or coarse sandy loam and chroma of 1 moist or 2 dry. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The E horizon has color value of 3 or 4 and 4 to 7 dry and chroma of 2 to 4. It is coarse sandy loam, loamy sand or loamy coarse sand. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The Bt horizon has color value of 3 or 4 and 4 to 6 dry and chroma of 2 to 4. It is coarse sandy loam or sandy loam. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The 2BC and 2C horizons have 10YR or 2.5Y hue, value of 3 to 6 and 5 to 8 dry, and chroma of 2 to 6. They are coarse sand, gravelly coarse sand, gravelly sand or gravelly loamy coarse sand. Coarse fragments of shale, sandstone, or igneous rocks range from 10 to 35 percent. They are slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Dorset series in the same family and the Arvilla and Renshaw series. Dorset soils have thicker sola. Arvilla and Renshaw soils do not have E horizons or argillic horizons and formed under grassland vegetation.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Metigoshe soils are on glacial outwash areas. Slopes range from 0 to 25 percent. These soils formed in loamy alluvium underlain by sand and gravel. The mean annual temperature ranges from 37 to 42 degrees F; and mean annual precipitation ranges from 21 to 27 inches, most of which falls in the spring and summer.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bottineau, Eramosh, Kelvin, and Rolla soils. Bottineau and Kelvin soils formed in glacial till and do not have the sand and gravel underlying material. Rolla soils formed in clayey glaciolacustrine sediments on nearby collapsed lake plains. Eramosh soils are in fens and are ponded during part of the growing season.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is medium to rapid. Permeability is moderate in the solum and very rapid in the substratum.

USE AND VEGETATION: The soils are primarily used for woodland pasture or wildlife habitat. Most areas remain in noncommercial stands of aspen, birch, oak and ash with an understory of shrubs. A few areas are used for the production of timber. Many lower-sloped areas have been cleared and used for small grains or hay.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central North Dakota. The series is of small extent.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 7 inches (after mixing) (A horizon); argillic horizon - the zone from 8 to 11 inches (Bt horizon); interfingering of E material throughout the Bt.
