MIGUEL SERIES


The Miguel series consists of very deep, well drained, slowly permeable soils that formed in loamy and/or clayey residuum weathered from sandstone and/or mudstone of Tertiary age. The soils occur on nearly level to moderately sloping, plane to convex low hills on inland, dissected coastal plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 8 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 737 mm (29 in), and mean annual air temperature is about 22 degrees C (72 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, active, hyperthermic Typic Paleustalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Miguel fine sandy loam in rangeland at an elevation of 67 m (220 ft).

A--0 to 25 cm (0 to 10 inches); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to weak fine granular; very hard, friable; many fine roots, few insect tunnels, slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. Thickness is 15 to 51 cm (6 to 20 in)

Bt1--25 to 33 cm (10 to 13 in); brown (10YR 5/3) sandy clay, brown (10YR 4/3) moist, with common medium, distinct reddish brown (5YR 5/4) masses of iron accumulation; compound strong medium prismatic and moderate medium angular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine roots; few fine pores; dark coatings on surfaces of prisms; common thick continuous clay films on surfaces of peds; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--33 to 74 cm (13 to 29 in); brown (7.5YR 5/4) sandy clay, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; many fine faint yellowish red masses of iron accumulation; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and medium angular blocky; very hard, very firm; plastic and sticky; few fine roots between peds; few fine pores; common thick continuous clay films on surfaces of peds; neutral; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt3--74 to 84 cm (29 to 33 in); reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) sandy clay, strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure parting to fine subangular blocky; very hard, very firm; sticky and plastic; few continuous clay films on surfaces of peds; few fine weakly cemented calcium carbonate concretions; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. Combined thickness of Bt horizons is 38 to 114 cm (15 to 45 in)

Btk--84 to 114 cm (33 to 45 in); reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) sandy clay loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; very hard, friable, sticky and plastic; few thin patchy clay films on surfaces of peds and in pores; 3 percent weakly cemented calcium carbonate concretions; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. Thickness is 0 to 51 cm (0 to 20 in)

BC--114 to 152 cm (45 to 60 in); pink (7.5YR 7/4) sandy clay loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Jim Wells County, Texas; From the intersection of U. S. Highway 281 and Texas Highway 44 in Alice; 6.25 miles south on U. S. Highway 281; 1.7 miles west on Farm Market Road 625; 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile northwest on ranch road, and 50 feet south of road in native rangeland.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Floresville and Wilco series in the same family. Similar soils are the Delfina, Gillette, Griter, Orelia, and Papalote series.
Delfina and Orelia soils: have a fine-loamy particle-size control section
Floresville soils: do not have redox concentrations
Gillette and Griter soils: are less than 152 cm (60 in) deep to sandstone
Papalote soils: have smectitic mineralogy and redox depletions
Wilco soils: do not have carbonates within 102 cm (40 in) of the surface and have sandy A horizons

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Clareville, Delfina, Edroy, and Orelia series.
Clareville soils: have a mollic epipedon and occur in lower drainageways
Edroy soils: do not contain an argillic horizon and occur in lower depressions
Delfina soils: contain 18 to 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section and occur on similar positions
Orelia soils: occur on lower positions and contain 18 to 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderately slow to slow. Runoff is low to medium on 0 to 1 percent slopes, medium to high on 1 to 5 percent slopes and high on 5 to 8 percent slopes.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for rangeland and improved pastures, but some areas are cultivated to cotton, grain sorghum, peanuts, and flax. Native vegetation consists of little bluestem, feathery bluestem, Nash and hooded windmillgrass, Texas and plains bristlegrass. Invaders are mainly woody; they are mesquite trees, spiny hackberry, colima, and pricklypear.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Land Resource Region I, Southwest Plateaus and Plains Range and Cotton Region; MLRA 83A, Northern Rio Grande Plains of Texas. This soil is of large extent.
