TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Xeric Haplocalcids
TYPICAL PEDON: Misfire silt loam-- on a 25 percent, west-facing slope in rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted. When described on August 9, 1988 the soil was dry from 0 to 17 inches and moist below this depth from irrigation water moving laterally from an alfalfa field above).
A--0 to 3 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine and few medium roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)
Bw--3 to 12 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine and few medium roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 20 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)
Bk1--12 to 17 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly sandy loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine and few medium roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 40 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles; many lime coatings 1mm thick on undersides and sides of coarse fragments; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary.
Bk2--17 to 23 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) extremely gravelly sandy loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 50 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles; many lime coatings 1mm thick on undersides and sides of coarse fragments; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); gradual wavy boundary.
Bk3--23 to 35 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) extremely gravelly sandy loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; single grain; loose; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 45 percent gravel, 25 percent cobbles; few very faint patchy lime coatings on undersides of coarse fragments; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bk horizons is 16 to 38 inches)
Bkq--35 to 60 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) extremely gravelly sandy loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist; single grain; loose; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 55 percent gravel, 10 percent cobbles, 10 percent stones; common lime and silica coatings less than 1mm on undersides of coarse fragments; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4).

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Holinrock, Packmo and Zer soils. Holinrock soils are moderately deep. Packmo soils contain pockets and layers of weakly cemented material within the control section. Zer soils have a depth to calcic horizon of 6 to 10 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Misfire soils are on terraces and formed in alluvium. Slopes are 20 to 45 percent and elevations are 4,000 to 5,500 feet. The climate is cold and moist in winter and spring and cool in summer. the average annual precipitation is 8 to 12 inches; average annual temperature is 38 to 42 degrees F. and the frost-free period is 75 to 100 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Dawtonia, Pattee, Perreau and Yearian soils. Dawtonia soils are on foothills and have argillic horizons. Pattee soils are on dissected terraces and have coarse-loamy control sections. Perreau soils are on terraces and foothills and have argillic horizons. Yearian soils are on terraces and have mollic epipedons and are poorly drained.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Medium and rapid runoff. Moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland. The natural vegetation is Wyoming big sagebrush and bluebunch wheatgrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East-central Idaho. These soils are not extensive.
