MUDDUCK SERIES

The Mudduck series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in slope alluvium and colluvium derived from sandstone and shale. These soils are on hillslopes. Slopes are 8 to 35 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 300 mm, and mean annual air temperature is about 4.0 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, calcareous, frigid Torrertic Ustorthents

TYPICAL PEDON: Mudduck clay loam, in rangeland (colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted).

A--0 to 10 cm; brown (7.5YR 4/4) clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3), moist; weak very fine granular structure; friable, slightly hard, very sticky, very plastic; few fine roots; few fine irregular pores; finely disseminated carbonate; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 10 cm thick)

C1--10 to 30 cm; pinkish gray (5YR 6/2) clay loam, gray (5YR 5/1), moist; massive; friable, slightly hard, very sticky, very plastic; few fine roots throughout; few fine irregular pores; finely disseminated carbonate; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (13 to 80 centimeters thick)

C2--30 to 60 cm; weak red (10R 5/3) clay, weak red (10R 4/2), moist; massive; firm, moderately hard, very sticky, very plastic; very few medium roots; few fine irregular pores; finely disseminated carbonate; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (20 to 144 cm thick)

C3--60 to 152 cm; pale yellow (5Y 8/4) clay, pale yellow (5Y 7/3), moist; massive; firm, moderately hard, very sticky, very plastic; few fine irregular pores; finely disseminated carbonate; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline, (pH 8.4).

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, Ksat in particle-size control section 0.5 to 3.0 um/sec.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mudduck soils are primarily used for rangeland. The potential native vegetation is juniper, bluegrass, rhizomatous wheatgrass, rabbit brush, Wyoming big sage, prickly pear cactus, and other forbs and grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Mudduck soils are of small extent in southwestern Wyoming. MLRAs 34A, 46.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Bozeman, Montana

SERIES PROPOSED: Lincoln County, Wyoming, 2016. Mudduck is a coined phrase.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - 0 to 10 cm (A horizon)
Particle-size control section - 25 to 100 cm (part of C1, C2, part of C3 horizons)
