MUDGEDRAW SERIES


The Mudgedraw series consists of deep, well drained, very slowly permeable soils formed in slope alluvium derived from limestone. These nearly level to gently sloping soils occur on footslopes of ridges on dissected plateaus. Slope ranges from 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 787 mm (31 in), and mean annual air temperature is about 18.3 degrees C (65 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, thermic Typic Haplusterts

TYPICAL PEDON: Mudgedraw gravelly clay loam, 3 percent slope in rangeland; elevation is 678.2 m (2225 ft) (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 15 cm, (0 to 6 in); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) gravelly clay loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2), moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine roots throughout and common coarse roots throughout and common medium roots throughout and common fine roots throughout; 20 percent nonflat subangular indurated 2 to 75 mm limestone fragments; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (Thickness is 10 to 28 cm [4 to 11 in]).

Btss1--15 to 41 cm, (6 to 16 in); dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) clay, very dark brown (7.5YR 2.5/2), moist; strong coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, very firm, very sticky, very plastic; common very fine roots throughout and common coarse roots throughout and common medium roots throughout and common fine roots throughout; 25 percent slickensides (pedogenic) on bottom faces of peds and distinct clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent nonflat subangular indurated 2 to 75 mm limestone fragments; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary.

Btss2--41 to 89 cm, (16 to 35 in); dark brown (7.5YR 3/3) clay, very dark brown (7.5YR 2.5/3), moist; strong coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, very firm, very sticky, very plastic; common medium roots throughout and common fine roots throughout; 20 percent distinct slickensides (pedogenic) on bottom faces of peds and prominent clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent nonflat subangular indurated 2 to 75 mm limestone fragments; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness is 71 to 142 cm [28 to 56 in]).

Btss3--89 to 119 cm, (35 to 47 in); reddish brown (5YR 4/4) clay, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4), moist; strong coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, very firm, very sticky, very plastic; common fine roots throughout; 15 percent distinct slickensides (pedogenic) on bottom faces of peds and prominent clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent nonflat subangular indurated 2 to 75 mm limestone fragments; slightly alkaline.

Cr--119 to 137 cm, (47 to 54 in); 70 percent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and 30 percent white (2.5Y 8/1), moderately cemented limestone bedrock, 70 percent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and 30 percent white (2.5Y 8/1), moist; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline; abrupt wavy boundary. (Thickness is 0 to 25 cm [0 to 10 in]).

R--137 to 160 cm, (54 to 63 in); strongly cemented limestone bedrock; strong effervescence.

TYPE LOCATION: Kerr County, TX; from the intersection of Interstate 10 and State Highway 41 about 23.5 miles southwest on State Highway 41 to US Highway 83; 4.6 miles south on US Highway 83 to private road; 2.4 miles east on private road; 0.8 miles north in rangeland.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
The surface is covered by about 10 percent limestone fragments 2 to 75 mm (1/8 to 3 in) in diameter.

Depth to argillic horizon: 10 to 28 cm (4 to 11 in)
Depth to slickensides: 9 to 28 cm (3.5 to 11 in)
Vertic features: The soil is usually moist, but when dry it has cracks ranging from 0.5 to 4 cm (0.5 to 1.5 in) wide extend from the surface to a depth of 50 to 98 cm (19.5 to 38.5 in). Cracks remain open for 90 to 210 cumulative days in most years
Thickness of the mollic epipedon: 50 to 99 cm (19.5 to 39 in)

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Campwood, Hollister, Indiahoma, Irion, Lockney, Roscoe, and Teagard series in the same family.
Campwood, Hollister, Irion, Lockney, and Roscoe Teagard soils: do not have an argillic horizon and are very deep.
Indianola soils: are deep to weakly stratified clays of Permian age.
Teagard soils: are moderately deep to sandstone.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Eckrant, Harper, Krum, Prade, Tarpley, and the tentative Bonedraw series.
Eckrant, Harper, and Tarpley soils: occur on interfluves and side slopes and are shallow to a lithic contact
Krum soils: occur in similar locations but do not have an argillic horizon
Prade soils: occur on side slopes and are shallow to a petrocalcic horizon
Bonedraw soils: occur in draws and have a clay-skeletal particle size control section

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage class: Well.
Permeability class: very slow.
Runoff: high on slopes less than 1 percent and very high on 1 to 5 percent slopes.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation consists of little bluestem, Indiangrass, big bluestem, sideoats grama, buffalograss, Texas wintergrass, maximilian sunflower, orange zexmania, Engelmann's daisy, live oak, elm, and hackberry.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Land Resource Region I - Southwest Plateaus and Plains Range and Cotton Region; MLRA 81B; the series is of moderate extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Kerr County, Texas, 2017, Kerr County soil survey area, Texas, 2017. The name is from a USGS topographic quadrangle name Mudge Draw, Texas.

REMARKS: The series was formerly included in the Barbarosa series. The series was separated based on the presence of slickensides.
