NALIVAG SERIES

The Nalivag series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium and colluvium from sandstone and shale. The Nalivag soils are on hill slopes, valley terraces and relict stream terraces. Slopes are 0 to 15 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 50 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Typic Ustorthents

TYPICAL PEDON: Nalivag loam - rangeland (Colors are for dry soils unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 3 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; common fine vesicular pores; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick)

C1--3 to 27 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many very fine and common fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); gradual smooth boundary. (10 to 30 inches)

C2--27 to 48 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) clay loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; massive; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); gradual smooth boundary. (10 to 25 inches thick)

C3--48 to 60 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8).

C horizon
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Betts(SD) series. Betts soils are moist in the spring and early summer.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Nalivag soils formed in alluvium and colluvium from sandstone and shale on hill slopes, valley terraces and relict stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. Elevations are 6,600 to 7,400 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 12 to 16 inches; mean annual air temperature is 45 to 52 degrees F., and the frost-free period is 100 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Lindrith, Elpedro, and Sparham soils. Lindrith soils have less than 18 percent clay. Elpedro soils have argillic horizons, Sparham soils have more than 35 percent clay.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to rapid runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Livestock grazing. The present vegetation is big sagebrush, galleta, blue grama and needleandthread.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northcentral New Mexico. The series is of moderate extent.
