NANIAK SERIES

The Naniak series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils in coastal tidal marshes. These soils formed in alluvium derived from basalt. Slope is 0 to 2 percent. The mean annual rainfall is about 3683 millimeters (145 inches), and the mean annual temperature is about 27 degrees C. (81 degrees F.)

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive, nonacid, isohyperthermic Typic Sulfaquents

TYPICAL PEDON: Naniak mucky silt loam - mangrove swamp forest. The soil was endosaturated when it was described on 07/15/79. Depth to water table was 15 centimeters (6 inches). Colors are for moist soil. All textures are apparent field textures.

Ag1--0 to 15 centimeters (0 to 6 inches); black (10YR 2/1) mucky silt loam; massive; nonsticky and nonplastic; few coarse and very coarse roots; common fine tubular pores; about 10 percent basalt gravels; neutral (pH 6.7); gradual smooth boundary. {10 to 41 centimeters (4 to 16 inches thick)}.

Ag2--15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches); black (10YR 2/1) mucky silt loam; massive; nonsticky and nonplastic; few coarse and very coarse roots; common fine tubular pores; when gentle hand pressure is applied, the material escapes readily between the fingers; slight odor of sulfur; about 5 percent basalt gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.4); gradual smooth boundary. {0 to 30 centimeters (0 to 12 inches thick)}.

ACg--30 to 46 centimeters (12 to 18 inches); black (10YR 2/1) mucky loam; massive; slightly sticky and nonplastic; few coarse roots; common fine tubular pores; when gentle hand pressure is applied, the material escapes readily between fingers; moderate odor of sulfur; about 5 percent basalt gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.2); gradual smooth boundary. {5 to 20 centimeters (2 to 8 inches thick)}.

Cg1--46 to 61 centimeters (18 to 24 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) mucky loam; massive; slightly sticky and nonplastic; when gentle hand pressure is applied, the material escapes readily between the fingers; moderate odor of sulfur; about 10 percent basalt gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.5); gradual smooth boundary. {10 to 51 centimeters (4 to 20 inches thick)}.

2Cse2--61 to 127 centimeters (24 to 50 inches); black (5Y 2.5/1) gravelly loam; massive; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strong odor of sulfur; about 25 percent basalt gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.4); gradual smooth boundary {0 to 99 centimeters (0 to 39 inches thick)}.

3Cse3--127 to 152 centimeters (50 to 60 inches); black (5Y 2.5/2) very gravelly loam; massive; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strong odor of sulfur; about 40 percent weathered basalt gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.5). {0 to 99 centimeters (0 to 39 inches thick)}.

TYPE LOCATION: Island of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, Kitti Municipality, Pehleng Village, about 154 feet NW. of the boathouse in the lot of Reikapw; latitude. 6 degrees 52 minutes 3 seconds N. and longitude. 158 degrees 9 minutes 8 seconds E. (WGS 84 datum)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to basalt or coral is 99 centimeters (39 inches) or more. The pedon contains 8 to 15 percent organic carbon. All horizons are neutral or slightly acid.

The Ag horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 moist, and Chroma of 1 moist. It is mucky silt loam. It has 0 to 10 percent gravel.

The ACg horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 moist, and Chroma of 1 moist. It is mucky loam. It has 0 to 5 percent gravel.

The Cg horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 moist, and Chroma of 1 moist. It is mucky loam. It has 0 to 10 percent gravel.

The Cse horizon has hue of 5YR, value of 2.5 moist, and Chroma of 1 or 2moist. It is mucky loam. It has 0 to 4 percent gravel.

COMPETING SERIES: These are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Naniak soils are in coastal tidal marshes and formed in alluvium from basic volcanic lava and organic deposits. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Elevation is sea level. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 2997 to 4978 millimeters (118 to 196 inches), and the mean annual temperature is about 27 degrees C. (81 degrees F.); with less than 6 degree C. difference between mean summer and mean winter temperatures.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ilachetomel and the competing Insak soils. The Ilachetomel soils are organic soils.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained; slow runoff; moderate permeability. Naniak soils are flooded daily with ocean saltwater during periods of high tide.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for mangrove wood production and wildlife habitat. The vegetation is mangrove swamp forest.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: On the Islands of Kosrae and Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. The series is of moderate extent.
