NEWFORK SERIES

The Newfork series consists of deep, poorly to somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in alluvium. Newfork soils are on floodplains and low terraces and have slopes of 0 to 4 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 12 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 35 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy-skeletal, mixed Typic Cryaquolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Newfork loam-pastureland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 7 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; common medium dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) mottles in the lower part; moderate coarse granular structure; slightly hard, very friable; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 12 inches thick)

B2g--7 to 14 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many large yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and dark gray (N 4/ ) mottles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick)

2Cg--14 to 60 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) extremely gravelly loamy sand; brown (10YR 5/3) moist; single grained; common medium yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and dark gray (N 4/ ) mottles in the sand matrix; loose; 60 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6).

TYPE LOCATION: Sublette County, Wyoming; about 0.5 miles west of Boulder; about 300 feet south and 1,250 feet east of the NW corner of sec. 16, T. 32 N., R. 108 W.; Boulder USGS quad; lat. 42 degrees 44 minutes 57 seconds N. and long. 109 degrees 43 minutes 43 seconds W., NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to the very gravelly loamy sand is 10 to 20 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is about 37 to 40 degrees F., and the mean summer soil temperature is about 52 to 58 degrees F. The control section is very gravelly loamy sand or very gravelly sand.

The A horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR, value of 3 through 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 through 3. It has few or common mottles. This horizon is slightly acid through slightly alkaline. It has 0 to 15 percent gravel and cobbles.

The Bg horizon has hue of 2.5Y through 7.5YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, 3 through 5 moist, and base chroma of 1 or 2. It has common or many mottles. This horizon is slightly acid through slightly alkaline. It has 0 to 15 percent gravel and cobbles.

The 2Cg horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR. The matrix material is loamy fine sand, loamy sand, or sand. Gravel ranges from 45 to 65 percent and cobbles from 0 to 15 percent. This horizon has common to many mottles. It is slightly acid through slightly alkaline.

2- Newfork Series

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Apeldorn and Cora series. These soils lack the mollic epipedon.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Newfork soils are on flood plains and low terraces. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. The soils formed in noncalcareous alluvium in an aquic moisture regime. Elevation is 5,500 to 8,000 feet. The mean annual precipitation is about 12 to 17 inches. The mean annual temperature is about 34 to 38 degrees F., and the mean summer temperature is about 50 to 56 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Boulder, Juvan, and Pinedale soils and the competing Cora soils. Boulder and Pinedale soils have argillic horizons. Juvan soils are highly calcareous and lack a mollic epipedon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly to poorly drained; slow and medium runoff; moderately rapid permeability in the B horizon and very rapid in the C horizon.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used as pasture and for the production of hay. Native vegetation is inland sedge, Nebraska sedge, baltic rush, tufted hairgrass, roses, and willows.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Along streams of intermountain valleys of Colorado and Wyoming. The series is of moderate extent.
