TYPICAL PEDON: Olustee fine sand. (Colors are for moist soil.)

A--0 to 8 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) fine sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine and few medium roots; very strongly acid; clear irregular boundary. (4 to 9 inches thick)

Bh--8 to 14 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) fine sand; few cracked coatings on sand grains; weak fine granular structure; friable; common fine and few medium roots; strongly acid; gradual irregular boundary. (4 to 15 inches thick)

Eg1--14 to 27 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) fine sand; many coarse distinct grayish brown (10YR 5/2) mottles; few medium prominent (7.5YR 3/2) Bh bodies; few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) streaks along root channels; single grained loose; few fine roots; few, medium ironstone pebbles; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary.

Eg2--27 to 37 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) fine sand; few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) streaks along root channels; single grained; loose; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the E horizon is 10 to 30 inches)

Btg-37 to 57 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) fine sandy loam; many coarse prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and few fine prominent red (2.5YR 4/6) soft masses of iron accumulation; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; friable; sand grains coated and bridged with clay; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 48 inches thick)

Cg--57 to 80 inches; reticulately mottled gray (10YR 6/1), strong brown (7.5YR 5/8), and red (2.5YR 4/6, 10R 4/6) fine sandy loam; massive; firm; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Baker County, Florida; approximately 3.5 miles southwest of Macclenny, 0.4 mile west of Florida Highway 121, 3050 feet west of and 3500 feet north of the southeast corner of sec. 18, T, 3 S., R. 22 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to the top of the Argillic: 25 to 40 inches
Depth to Bedrock: Greater than 80 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: 0.5 to 1.5 feet, November to April or March to September
Soil Reaction extremely acid to strongly acid throughout, except where limed

Texture (fine-earth fraction)-- sand, fine sand, loamy sand or loamy fine sand
Other features- Many of the sand grains are coated with organic matter

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major Uses: Truck crops, pasture and woodland
Dominant Vegetation: Where cultivated-- potatoes, cabbage and other leafy vegetables. Where wooded-- several bluestem species, hairy panicum, indiangrass, low panicums, and pineland threeawn. Woody vegetation includes longleaf and slash pine, gallberry, fetterbush, waxmyrtle, and sawpalmettos.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT:
Distribution: Lower Coastal Plain in Florida, Georgia, and possibly South and North Carolina
Extent: moderate

REMARKS:

Diagnostic horizons and soil characteristics recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - The zone extending from the surface to a depth of 8 inches. (A horizon)
Spodic horizon - The zone between 8 and 14 inches. (Bh horizon)
Argillic horizon - The zone between 37 and 57 inches. (Btg horizon)
Series control section--the zone from 0 to 60 inches
