PAICE SERIES

Typically, Paice soils have dark grayish brown, cobbly loam Al horizons; brown, clay loam B2t horizons; and an indurated lime hardpan at depths of 31 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Petrocalcic Palexerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Cobbly loam - rangeland
(Colors are for dry soils unless otherwise noted.)

All--0 to 2 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) cobbly loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, friable, slightly plastic; many fine roots; few medium and fine tubular pores; noncalcare-ous; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 3 inches thick)

A12--2 to 9 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common coarse, medium and fine roots; common medium and few coarse tubular pores; noncalcareous; mildly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 7 inches thick)

B2t--9 to 19 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak coarse blocky structure that parts to moderate fine angular blocks; very hard, friable, sticky, plastic; common medium and fine roots; few coarse, medium and fine tubular pores; thin continuous clay films; noncalcareous; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (10 to 15 inches thick)

B3tca--19 to 24 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) light clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure that parts to moderate fine blocks; very hard, friable, sticky, plastic; few medium and fine roots; few fine pores; few thin clay films; moderately calcareous; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)

Clca--24 to 31 inches; very pale brown (10YR 8/3) loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; massive; very hard, firm, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few fine roots; few fine pores; strongly calcareous; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); clear wavy boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)

C2cam--31 to 48 inches; Indurated lime hardpan.

TYPE LOCATION: Beaver County, Utah; 8.5 miles north and 5.5 miles west of Manderfield; 1/2 mile west of NE.
corner of sec. 11, T.27S., R.8W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The solum is 20 to 30 inches thick. Depth to the indurated lime hardpan ranges from 30 to 40 inches. The organic matter content of 1 percent or more extends to less than 20 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 42 to 46 degrees F., and the mean summer soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches is 60 to 63 degrees F. These soils are moist in some part of the moisture control section more than 50 percent of time the soil temperature is above 41 degrees F. but are continually dry for 50 to 70 consecutive days during the summer months in more than 6 out of 10 years.

The Al horizon has chroma of 2 or 3. It has fine granular or subangular blocky structure. This horizon is soft or slightly hard. It is 5 to 10 inches thick.

The B2t horizon has value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is clay loam containing 27 to 35 percent clay. This horizon has weak coarse or moderate fine angular blocky structure.

The B3tca horizon has loam than 1 percent organic matter. The Cca horizon hds value of 7 or 8 dry.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Black Ridge and May Day series. Black Ridge soils have more than 35 percent clay in the argillic horizon and have a mean annual temperature of more than 47 degrees F. May Day soils have rock fragments throughout the profile and are less than 20 inches deep over the indurated hardpan

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Paice soils are on rolling hills at elevations of 6,900 to 7,400 feet. Slopes range from 3 to 10 percent. The soils formed in about 30 inches of soil material derived from basalt. The climate is moist subhumid. Mean annual temperature is 40 to 44 degrees F., mean summer temperature is 61 to 64 degrees F., and the average annual precipitation is 14 to 18 inches. Frost-free period is 80 to 100 days.

PRINCIPAL ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Black Ridge soils.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; medium runoff; moderate permeability to hardpan.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for summer range for cattle, spring range for sheep, and winter range for big game. Present vegetation is mostly big sagebrush and Gambel oak.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Utah. Maple Mountain area in East Beaver Area. This series is inextensive.
