PANOZA SERIES

The Panoza series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils formed in material weathered from soft calcareous sandstone, shale and conglomerate. Panoza soils are on hills and mountains and have slopes of 9 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 8 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 60 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Calcic Haploxerepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Panoza loam - on an east facing slope of 30 percent under red brome and other annual grasses at 2,280 feet elevation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. When described on April 15, 1981 the soil was slightly moist throughout.)

A--0 to 6 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular and interstitial pores; 2 percent pebbles; strongly effervescent with disseminated lime, moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual smooth boundary. (6 to 16 inches thick)

Bw--6 to 18 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; common fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular and interstitial pores; 5 percent pebbles; violetly effervescent with disseminated lime, moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 16 inches thick)

Bk--18 to 24 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots, common very fine tubular pores; 5 percent pebbles; violently effervescent with carbonates segregated as few soft masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)

Cr--24 to 30 inches; white (10YR 8/1) soft calcareous coarse grained sandstone.

TYPE LOCATION: San Luis Obispo County, California; approximately 8.5 miles southeast on Simmler-Soda Lake Road from the intersection with Soda Lake-San Diego Creek Road, then approximately 0.5 mile southwest on dirt road just before the cattle guard, 1,570 feet north and 910 feet west of the southeast corner of sec. 12, T. 31 S., R. 20 E., 200 feet uphill from the north-north west bend in the creek, magnetic bearing 308 degrees; USGS Painted Rock topographic quadrangle; lat. 35 degrees, 14 minutes, 17 seconds N. and long. 119 degrees, 46 minutes, 32 seconds W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to soft calcareous sandstone, shale or conglomerate is 20 to 40 inches. Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 60 degrees to 68 degrees F. The moisture control section is moist in some part from late December until April and is moist in all parts for 45 consecutive days and is dry in all parts for more than 180 days (see remarks).

The A horizon has dry color of 10YR 6/2, 6/3, 7/2, 7/3; 2.5Y 6/2 and moist color of 10YR 4/2, 4/3, 4/4, 5/4; 2.5Y 4/2. Textures are loam, clay loam, sandy clay loam, stony loam or stony sandy clay loam. Stones and cobbles on the surface range from 0 to 35 percent. Gravel content is 0 to 10 percent by volume. It is slightly to violently effervescent.

The B horizon has dry color of 10YR 6/3, 6/4, 7/2, 7/3, 7/4; 2.5Y 6/2 and moist color of 10YR 4/3, 4/4, 5/3, 6/3; 2.5Y 4/2. Textures are loam, clay loam, or sandy clay loam. Gravel content is 2 to 10 percent by volume. It is strongly to violently effervescent with disseminated lime. Carbonates are segregated as few to common soft masses in the Bk horizon.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Akers series. Akers soils do not bedrock within 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Panoza soils are on hills and mountains and have slopes of 9 to 75 percent. The soils formed in material weathered from soft calcareous sandstone, shale or conglomerate. Elevations are 1,800 to 4,100 feet. The climate is semiarid with hot dry summers and cool moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 7 to 12 inches. Average January temperature is about 46 degrees F; average July temperature is about 77 degrees F; mean annual temperature is about 58 degrees to 62 degrees F. The average frost-free season is about 150 to 250 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the competing Kilmer soil and Beam (T), Hillbrick, and Temblor soils. Beam (T), Hillbrick and Temblor soils are less than 20 inches deep.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to very high runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for rangeland and some dry farmed grain. Natural vegetation is mainly red brome, filaree, goldenbush and buckwheat.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Hills and mountains of the Temblor and Caliente ranges in California, MLRA 15. These soils are moderately extensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California

SERIES PROPOSED: San Luis Obispo County, California; Carrizo Plain Area, 1985. Soil name is coined.
