PINNCAMP SERIES

The Pinncamp series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in alluvium derived from igneous rocks. The Pinncamp soils are on stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 5 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 17 inches (432 millimeters) and the mean annual air temperature is about 61 degrees F (16 degrees C).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Mixed, thermic Psammentic Haploxerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Pinncamp gravelly coarse sand under a canopy of live oak on a 1 percent slope at an elevation of 980 feet (300 meters) (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted).

Oi--0 to 2 inches (0 to 5 centimeters); woody slightly decomposed plant material of oak leaves and twigs; abrupt smooth boundary.

Oe--2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters); peaty moderately decomposed plant material; neutral (pH 6.9); abrupt smooth boundary.

A1--4 to 12 inches (10 to 30 centimeters); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) gravelly coarse sand, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate very coarse subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common medium and fine roots; many fine irregular pores; 15 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 5.8); clear wavy boundary.

A2--12 to 22 inches (30 to 56 centimeters); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) gravelly loamy coarse sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate coarse and very coarse subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine through coarse roots; many fine irregular pores; 15 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 6.0); clear wavy boundary.

A3--22 to 36 inches (56 to 91 centimeters); brown (10YR 5/3) loamy coarse sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and medium roots; many fine irregular pores; 10 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.3); clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizons is 10 to 16 inches, 25 to 40 centimeters)

C--36 to 64 inches (91 to 162 centimeters); pale brown (10YR 6/3) loamy coarse sand, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; loose, loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; many fine irregular pores; 10 percent gravel, slightly acid (pH 6.2). (28 to 40 inches, 70 to 100 centimeters thick)

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Pinncamp soils are on stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 5 percent. These soils formed in alluvium from igneous rocks. Elevation ranges from 980 to 1,640 feet (300 to 500 meters). The climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 17 to 19 inches (432 to 483 millimeters). The mean annual temperature is about is 59 to 63 degrees F (15 to 17 degrees C). Frost free season is 190 to 210 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Toags series. Toags soils are under chamise and do not have a mollic epipedon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; medium or high runoff; rapid permeability. These soils do not flood or pond.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for watershed, wildlife habitat and recreation. Vegetation is live oak forest.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: San Benito County, California in MLRA 14 Central California Coastal Valleys. These soils are of small extent.
