PLAYER SERIES
The Player series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in colluvium derived from welded tuff. They are on breaks. Slopes range from 30 to 75 percent. The average annual precipitation is about 360 mm and the average annual temperature is about 7 degrees C.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey-skeletal, smectitic, frigid Ultic Palexerolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Player very gravelly loam - on an east-facing slope of 45 percent under rangeland vegetation at 1,925 meters elevation. When described on May 21, 1981, the soil was moist throughout. (Colors are for dry soil unless noted.)
A--0 to 13 cm; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very gravelly loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; moderate fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; 30 percent gravel and 15 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 6.7); gradual smooth boundary. (8 to 48 cm thick)
Bt1--13 to 28 cm; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very gravelly clay, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 55 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear smooth boundary. (13 to 36 cm thick)
Bt2--28 to 56 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) extremely gravelly clay, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; strong medium angular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many prominent clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 60 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (20 to 60 cm thick)
Bt3--56 to 114 cm; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) extremely gravelly clay, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; strong fine angular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many prominent clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 70 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary. (40 to 64 cm thick)
2Bt--114 to 152 cm; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) extremely gravelly clay, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; strong fine angular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine tubular pores; many prominent clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 60 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0).
TYPE LOCATION: Twin Falls County, Idaho about 19 miles southwest of Rogerson, Idaho; about 420 feet south and 1,700 feet west of the northeast corner of section 29, T. 16 S., R. 14 E.; latitude 42 degrees 00 minutes 41 seconds N and longitude 114 degrees 50 minutes 13 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 42.0113889 latitude, -114.8369444 longitude.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Moist in winter and spring and continuously dry in all parts for significant periods in summer and fall; xeric soil moisture regime bordering on aridic.
Mean annual soil temperature: 6 to 7 degrees C.

Bt horizons
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR
Value: 3 through 6 dry, 2 through 4 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4 dry or moist

COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Boiler,
Hudspeth, and
Mug series.
Hudspeth and
Mug soils are 50 to 100 cm deep to bedrock.
Boiler soils are dry for less than 80 consecutive days during the summer.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Player soils are on breaks. The slope ranges from 30 to 75 percent. The soils formed in colluvium derived from welded tuff. Elevations are 1,650 to 1,955 meters. The average annual precipitation ranges from 300 to 380 mm. The average annual temperature is 6 to 7 degrees C. The frost-free season is 70 to 80 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Elhina,
Hogmalat,
Isknat, and
Rutherford soils. Elhina soils are moderately deep to a duripan, and occur on terraces. Hogmalat soils are shallow to bedrock, and occur on summit shoulders. Isknat soils are pachic, and occur on alluvial fans. Rutherford soils are moderately deep to bedrock, and occur on ridgetops and dipslopes.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained, rapid runoff; low saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Player soils are used for rangeland. Native vegetation is low sagebrush, mountain big sagebrush, Idaho fescue, bluebunch wheatgrass, Sandberg bluegrass, and Columbia needlegrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Player soils are of small extent in south central Idaho and northeast Nevada. Additional acreage is likely in northern Nevada. MLRA 25.
