PEEVYWELL SERIES

The Peevywell series consists of moderately deep to a duripan, well drained soils that formed in alluvium and colluvium from mixed igneous and metamorphic rocks. Peevywell soils are on fan terraces, hills, and footslopes to mountains and have slopes of 2 to 60 percent. Permeability is slow to a duripan. The average annual precipitation is about 13 inches, and the average annual temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, frigid Typic Durixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Peevywell loam - on a 3 percent slope at an elevation of 4,980 feet in rangeland. When described November 5, 1979, the soil was moist to 12 inches and dry below. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 3 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine platy structure; soft, very friable; many very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine irregular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.2); clear wavy boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

A2--3 to 12 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine angular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (4 to 9 inches thick)

Bt1--12 to 18 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; strong fine angular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds and lining pores; neutral (pH 6.6); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 9 inches thick)

Bt2--18 to 22 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; strong fine angular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few very fine and fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; many distinct clay films on faces of peds and lining pores; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 9 inches thick)

Bt3--22 to 30 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) clay, dark brown 7.5YR 4/4) moist; strong medium and coarse prismatic structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine and fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; about 10 percent pebbles; many prominent slickensides on faces of peds; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

2Bq--30 to 34 inches light brown (7.5YR 6/4) weakly cemented duripan, strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) moist; massive; very hard, very firm; many silica laminations between rock fragments, few fine fine roots matted along fractures; few fine tubular pores; about 40 percent pebbles and 10 percent cobbles; weakly cemented with silica; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)

2Bqm--34 to 44 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) indurated duripan, strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) moist; massive; few very fine tubular pores; about 40 percent pebbles and 15 percent cobbles; strongly cemented plates with laminar capping (1 to 4 mm thick); continuous silica cementation between rock fragments; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (10 to 19 inches thick)

3C--44 to 61 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) very gravelly sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine interstitial pores; about 45 percent pebbles; slight effervescence; mildly alkaline (pH 7.6).

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Budlewis, Forvic(T), Hatpeak, Manard, Oshone(T), and Rastus series. Manard soils have bedrock at depths of 20 to 40 inches. Budlewis soils have a calcic horizon above the duripan. Forvic soils have a Mollic epipedon that is 20 to 30 inches thick. Hatpeak soils are calcareous in the upper part of the duripan and have clear boundaries between the A and B horizon. Manard soils have bedrock above 40 inches. Oshone soils have a pan less than 10 inches thick. Rastus soils have carbonates above and in the duripan.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Peevywell soils are on fan terraces, hills, and footslopes to mountains. Slopes range from 2 to 60 percent. Elevation ranges from 4,700 to 6,500 feet. The soil formed in alluvium and colluvium from mixed igneous and metamorphic rocks. The average annual precipitation is 12 to 16 inches, most of which falls as snow and early spring rain. The average annual temperature is about 40 degrees to 44 degrees F. The frost-free season is 60 to 90 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Goodington, Smelter, Muldoon, and Starhope soils and the Manard soils. Goodington soils are 40 to 60 inches deep to bedrock and occur on Lava plains. Smelter soils have mollic epipedons greater than 20 inches thick and occur on north and east-facing foothills. Muldoon soils have a duripan deeper than 40 inches and occur on fan terraces. Starhope soils lack a duripan and are moderately deep and occur on south-facing and east-facing foothills. Manard soils have bedrock between 20 and 40 inches and occur on basalt plains.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is slow to very rapid. Permeability is slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly used for rangeland. Vegetation is alkali sagebrush, low sagebrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, Idaho fescue, and Nevada bluegrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South-central Idaho and North-eastern Nevada. The series is of limited extent.
