(4 to 10 inches thick)

Ck2--16 to 27 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) very gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) and very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; very hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common fine irregular pores; 40 percent by volume very pale brown (10YR 8/2) extremely hard semi-rounded calcium carbonate concretions; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 12 inches thick)

Ck3--27 to 38 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) and very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common fine tubular and many fine irregular pores; 25 percent by volume very pale brown (10YR 8/2) extremely hard semi-rounded calcium carbonate concretions; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (7 to 15 inches thick)

Ck4--38 to 56 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) sandy loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) and very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; very hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine tubular pores; 5 percent by volume very pale brown (10YR 8/2) extremely hard semi-rounded calcium carbonate concretions and many soft calcium carbonate masses; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

Ck5--56 to 65 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; very hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine tubular and irregular pores; 10 percent by volume cobble; many very pale brown (10YR 8/2) calcium carbonate masses and few concretions that form a weakly cemented hardpan in places; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

2C--65 to 72 inches- very pale brown (10YR 7/3) very gravelly loamy sand, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; single grained; loose; many fine irregular pores; 50 percent by volume gravel; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil moisture: Intermittently moist in some part of the soil moisture control section during July - September and December - February. Driest during May and June. Typic aridic soil moisture regime.

Soil temperature: ranges from 72 degrees to 80 degrees F.

Depth to the 2C horizon is more than 40 inches

Clay content: averages less than 18 percent clay

Calcium carbonate: more than 40 percent CaC03 equivalent by weight

Rock fragments: ranges from 15 to 55 percent but averages less than 35 percent by volume. The gravel are calcium carbonate concretions and irregularly shaped fragments.

The control section is gravelly loam or gravelly sandy loam.

Structure ranges from weak thin platy to weak fine granular

Ck horizon
Hue: 7.5YR, 10YR

It is weakly cemented in some pedons.

COMPETING SERIES: These are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Perryville soils are on nearly level to gently sloping alluvial fans and terraces. Slopes are dominantly 0 to 3 percent. The soil formed in mixed alluvium from basalt, andesite, rhyolite, granite, limestone and quartzite. The climate is arid and semiarid continental with mild winters and extremely hot summers. Elevation ranges from 400 to 2500 feet. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 4 to 10 inches. Mean annual air temperature is 67 degrees to 74 degrees F. The frost-free period is 250 to 350 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Laveen, Gunsight, Rillito, Cavelt, Gilman, Glenbar, Mohall and Pinal soils. Cavelt soils have strongly cemented petrocalcic horizons at shallow depths. Gilman and Glenbar soils do not have calcic horizons and have mixed mineralogy.
Mohall soils have moderately fine-textured argillic horizons. Pinal soils have an indurated duripan at shallow depths. Laveen, Gunsight, and Rillito are not carbonatic.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to medium runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Under irrigation, these soils are used for cotton and alfalfa. Native vegetation is mainly creosotebush, triangleleaf bursage, fourwing saltbush, cholla cactus, alfileria, sixweeks grama, white bursage and littleleaf paloverde.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern Arizona. Perryville soils are of small extent. MLRA is 40.
