RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil Moisture - the moisture control section is dry in all parts more than three fourths of the time the soil temperature exceeds 41 degrees F. The majority of the moisture is received during July, August and September with the soil being moist intermittently above the SMCS or in the upper part of the SMCS for very short periods of time. Typic aridic moisture regime.
Soil temperature - 62 to 65 degrees F.
Depth to calcic: 20 to 40 inches
Control section: less than 15 percent fine sand or coarser and 27 to 35 percent clay.
A horizon
Hue - 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4
Texture: loam, clay loam, silty clay loam, sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or silt loam.
Bkw horizon
Hue - 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 5 through 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4
Texture: loam, silt loam, clay loam, or silty clay loam
Bk horizon
Hue - 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 6 through 8 dry, 5 or 6 moist
Chroma: 3 or 4
The Bk has thin weakly cemented lenses in the lower part in some pedons. Weak accumulation of gypsum or gravel or cobbles commonly occurs below a depth of 40 inches.
Bk1 horizon has common to many, fine to medium soft calcium carbonate masses and concretions.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on broad, nearly level to gently sloping plains, and on alluvial fans. Elevations range from 3,000 to 5,000 feet. Slopes are plane and mostly of less than one percent gradient ranging to 5 percent. The soils formed in medium and moderately fine textured material high in carbonates that is mostly of alluvial origin from limestone, with small amounts of eolian material. This climate is arid to semiarid with average rainfall of 8 to 12 inches. The average annual temperature is 57 degrees to 64 degrees F. The frost-free season is 180 to 215 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Atoka, Bigetty, Holloman, Lozier, Pecos, Reeves, Tencee and Upton soils. Atoka, Tencee and Upton soils have petrocalcic horizons and occur on ridges. Bigetty and Pecos soils are on floodplains and have thick mollic epipedons. Holloman and Reeves soils have gypsum at depths of less than 40 inches. Lozier soils are on low limestone hills and are shallow to limestone bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained, moderately slow to slow runoff; moderate to moderately slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for rangeland. Large areas are irrigated and used for growing cotton, alfalfa, sorghum and small grains. Native vegetation is mainly burrograss, tobosa, blue grama, bush muhly, mat muhly, alkali sacaton, threeawns, vine mesquite and mesquite.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern and south-central New Mexico. The series of large extent. MLRA 42.
