TAXONOMIC CLASS: Medial over loamy-skeletal, amorphic over isotic, mesic Ultic Haploxerands
TYPICAL PEDON: Redbone gravelly medial sandy loam on a south southwest facing 10 percent slope under a cover of white fir, ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, incense cedar and sugar pine at an elevation of 4600 feet, (1402 m). When described on 8/7/97 the soil was dry throughout. Clay percentages are based on apparent field texture. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted)
Oi--0 to 1 inches, (0 to 3 cm); needles and twigs.
Oe--1 to 1.2 inches, (3 to 4 cm); partially decomposed needles and twigs.
A--1.2 to 3 inches, (4 to 9 cm); reddish brown (5YR 5/4) gravelly medial sandy loam, dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) moist; 14 percent clay; weak fine granular structure; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and common fine roots; many very fine to medium irregular and tubular pores; noneffervescent; 30 percent gravel; slightly acid, pH 6.3 by pH meter 1:1 water; NaF pH 10.6; abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 6 inches, (5 to 15 cm) thick)
Bt1--3 to 7 inches, (9 to 19 cm); reddish brown (5YR 5/4) gravelly medial sandy loam, dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) moist; 16 percent clay; weak fine subangular blocky structure; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine to medium roots; many very fine irregular and tubular pores; few clay bridges between sand grains; noneffervescent; 10 percent gravel; slightly acid, pH 6.3 by pH meter 1:1 water; NaF pH 10.5; clear smooth boundary.
Bt2--7 to 16 inches, (19 to 42 cm); red (2.5YR 5/6) gravelly medial fine sandy loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; 17 percent clay; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine, many fine and medium and few coarse roots; many very fine and fine irregular and tubular pores; common clay bridging between sand grains; noneffervescent; 30 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; moderately acid, pH 6.0 by pH meter 1:1 water; NaF pH 10.2; clear smooth boundary.
2Bt3--16 to 27 inches, (42 to 70 cm); brown (7.5YR 5/4) very gravelly fine sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; 17 percent clay; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine, many fine and medium and few coarse roots; many very fine and fine irregular and tubular pores; common clay bridging between sand grains; noneffervescent; 35 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; moderately acid, pH 5.6 by pH meter 1:1 water; NaF pH 10.0; clear smooth boundary.
2Bt4--27 to 40 inches, (70 to 103 cm); brown (7.5YR 5/4) very gravelly coarse sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; 17 percent clay; weak fine subangular blocky structure; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine to medium and few coarse roots; many very fine and fine irregular and tubular pores; few clay bridges between sand grains; noneffervescent; 45 percent gravel; moderately acid, pH 6.0 by pH meter 1:1 water; NaF pH 10.1; clear smooth boundary.
2Bt5--40 to 54 inches, (103 to 138 cm); brown (7.5YR 5/4) very gravelly coarse sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; 15 percent clay; weak fine granular structure; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine and few coarse roots; many very fine and fine irregular and tubular pores; few clay bridges between sand grains; noneffervescent; 50 percent gravel; slightly acid, pH 6.1 by pH meter 1:1 water; NaF pH 10.4; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 36 to 58 inches, (91 to 147 cm) thick).
2Cr--54 inches, (138 cm); very weakly cemented weathered mudflow bedrock; roots and fractures are greater than 4 inches, (10 cm) apart.
TYPE LOCATION: Butte County, California; about 1.7 miles east of Lomo, approximately 1600 feet west and 2400 feet north of the southwest corner of Section 7, Township 25 N., Range 3 E.; in an unsectionized area, 40 degrees, 02 minutes, 20.64 seconds North latitude and 121 degrees, 35 minutes, 1.02 seconds West longitude, NAD83. U.S.G.S. Quad: Butte Meadows, California.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to paralithic bedrock is 40 to 60 inches, (102 to 152 cm). The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 54 degrees F, (8 to 12 degrees C). The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from about July to about October (about 90 days). The particle-size control section averages 10 to 18 percent clay and 15 to 35 percent rock fragments, mostly gravel in the upper part and 15 to 22 percent clay and 35 to 50 percent rock fragments, mostly gravel in the lower part. Mineralogy is amorphic over isotic. Acid Oxalate extractable Al plus 1/2 Fe ranges from 2.2 to 2.6 to a depth of 16 inches, (41 cm). P retention ranges from 85 to 96 percent throughout. Base saturation by sum of cations ranges from 28 to 43 percent throughout. Rock fragments on the surface range from 10 to 35 percent gravel, 0 to 15 percent cobbles and 0 to 10 percent stones.
The A horizon dry color is 7.5YR 4/3, 5/4, 6/3, 6/4, 5YR 5/4 or 6/3. Moist color is 7.5YR 3/2, 3/3, 5YR 3/3, 4/3 or 2.5YR 3/4. Texture is gravelly medial sandy loam, very gravelly medial sandy loam or gravelly medial fine sandy loam. Clay content ranges from 10 to 16 percent. Rock fragments range from 15 to 30 percent gravel, 0 to 5 percent cobbles and 0 to 5 percent stones. Organic matter ranges from 8 to 12 percent. NaF pH ranges from 10 to 11.5. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid.
The upper Bt horizon dry color is 7.5YR 5/4, 5/6, 6/4, 5YR 5/4, 5/6, 6/4, 6/6 or 2.5YR 5/6. Moist color is 7.5YR 3/3, 5YR 3/3, 4/3, 4/4, 4/6, 2.5YR 3/3, 3/4 or 4/6. Texture is gravelly medial sandy loam, very gravelly medial sandy loam, gravelly medial fine sand loam or gravelly medial loam. Clay content ranges from 12 to 18 percent. Rock fragments range from 15 to 35 percent gravel, 0 to 5 percent cobbles and 0 to 5 percent stones. Organic matter ranges from 2 to 6 percent. NaF pH ranges from 10 to 11.5. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid.
The lower Bt horizon dry color is 10YR 5/4, 6/6, 7/6, 7.5YR 5/4, 5/6 or 6/4. Moist color is 10YR 4/3, 4/4, 7.5YR 4/4, 5/4 or 5YR 4/3. Texture is very gravelly sandy loam, extremely gravelly sandy loam, very gravelly fine sandy loam, very gravelly coarse sandy loam or very gravelly sandy clay loam. Clay content ranges from 15 to 22 percent. Rock fragments range from 35 to 75 percent gravel, 0 to 10 percent cobbles and 0 to 10 percent stones. Organic matter ranges from 0.5 to 2 percent. NaF pH ranges from 9.7 to 10.5. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to slightly acid.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Redbone soils are on volcanic ridge tops in Cascade mountains. Slopes range from 2 to 30 percent. These soils formed in tephra over residuum weathered from volcanic rocks. Elevation is 3800 to 5200 feet, (1158 to 1585 m). Mean annual precipitation is 70 to 75 inches, (1778 to 1905 mm). The mean annual temperature is 50 to 52 degrees F, (10 to 11 degrees C). Frost free season is 100 to 140 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Beecee and Lydon soils. Beecee soils are on side slopes and are very deep. Lydon soils are on ridge tops and side slopes and are moderately deep to lithic bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; low to medium runoff; moderately rapid saturated hydraulic conductivity in the A horizon, moderate to moderately rapid in the Bt horizon.
USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for timber production, wildlife habitat and watershed. Vegetation is ponderosa pine, white fir, Douglas-fir, sugar pine, incense cedar, California black oak, greenleaf manzanita, prostrate ceanothus, common snowberry, Pacific dogwood, Sierra chinquapin, deerbrush, California needlegrass, whitevein shinleaf, canyon live oak and broadleaf starflower.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Butte County, California and occurs in the M261DM (Lassen-Almanor) subsection of the M261D (Southern Cascade) section. MLRA 22B Southern Cascade Mountains. The soils are not extensive.
