A--2 to 3 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) ashy silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and medium and common coarse roots; moderately acid (pH 6.0); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 3 inches thick)
Bw--3 to 14 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) ashy silt loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) dry; weak, medium subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and medium and common coarse roots; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear wavy boundary. TYPE LOCATION: Sanders County, Montana; 2550 feet west and 50 feet north of the southeast corner of section 29, T. 24N., R. 31W.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landform - lake plains and terraces in valleys.
Elevation - 2200 to 2800 feet.
Slope - 0 to 35 percent.
Parent material - volcanic ash over glaciolacustrine deposits.
Climate - long, cold winters; moist springs; warm summers.
Mean annual precipitation - 28 to 34 inches.
Mean annual temperaure - is 42 to 45 degrees F.
Frost-free period - 90 to 105 days.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, moderate permeability to the 4Bt horizon, slow below.
USE AND VEGETATION: Redlock soils are used mainly for woodland, understory grazing, and wildlife habitat. Potential native vegetation is mainly Douglas fir, western larch, lodgepole pine, grand fir, western white pine, western red cedar, and western hemlock. Understory vegetation is mainly common snowberry, pinegrass, oceanspray, twinflower, queencup beadlily, sweetscented bedstraw, wild sarsaparilla, and other forbs and shrubs.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Redlock soils are of small extent in the valleys of northwestern Montana.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: an ochric epipedon from the mineral soil surface to 7 inches mixed (A, Bw horizons); an ash influenced surface layer from 2 to 14 inches (A, Bw horizons); an albic horizon from 14 to 19 inches (2E horizon); a particle size control section from 24 to 44 inches (2Bt/E, 3E and Bt, 4Bt horizons). Redlock soils have a udic moisture regime and a frigid temperature regime.
