The Ab horizon, where present, has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 3 or 4. Redoximorphic accumulations in shades of brown range from none to common. Content of pebbles range from 2 to 20 percent, by volume. Texture is sandy loam, loam in the fine-earth fraction.
The C horizons have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. Content of pebbles range from 5 to 85 percent, by volume. Texture is coarse sand, sand, fine sand, loamy sand, sandy loam, fine sandy loam or loam in the fine-earth fraction.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no known series in the same family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Reilly soils are on natural levee positions along river and stream channels in flood plains of the Humid Coastal Plains MLRA of Puerto Rico. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. They formed in medium to coarse textured alluvial stratified sediments with sand and gravels in dominant proportions. The climate is humid tropical. The average annual precipitation range from 43 to 72 inches and the average annual temperature ranges from 74 to 79 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bajura, Coloso, Dique and Toa series. All of these soils are in flood plains. The poorly drained Bajura soils are on slightly lower positions, and have clayey control sections. The somewhat poorly drained Coloso soils are on slightly lower positions, do not have a mollic epipedon, and have clayey control sections. The well drained Dique soils are on similar positions, do not have a mollic epipedon, and are fine-loamy. The well drained Toa soils are on slightly lower positions and have clayey control sections.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Excessively drained; rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Reilly soils are in pastureland and abandoned sugar cane plantations and are used for grazing. The vegetation consists of native and introduced grasses and shrubs.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: River flood plains in the humid coastal plains of Puerto Rico. The series is small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Humacao Soil Survey Area, Puerto Rico; 1968.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon:
Mollic epipedon - the zone from 0 to 10 inches (Ap horizon).
Sandy-skeletal feature - the zone from 10 to 40 inches contains more than 35 percent, by volume, pebbles.
Reilly soils are in MLRA 272.
