REPPART SERIES

The Reppart series consists of deep, well drained soils formed under dense conifer forest over limestone bedrock at elevations ranging between 5,000 and 6,500 feet. Mean annual precipitation is 18 to 22 inches. Mean annual temperature is between 40 and 44 degrees F. and mean summer temperature is less than 60 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, carbonatic Ustic Calcicryepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Reppart loam - conifer forest. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

0i--0 to 1 inch; forest litter and organic mulch.

A1--1 to 5 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) loam, mixed very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate coarse platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many fine roots; sand grains are mainly uncoated; noncalcareous; slightly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 6 inches thick)

A2--5 to 11 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many fine roots; moderately calcareous; slightly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. (A1 horizon is 6 to 14 inches thick.)

Ck1--11 to 22 inches; very pale brown (10YR 8/2) gravelly loam, mixed grayish brown (10YR 5/2) and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few very fine roots; 15 to 20 percent gravel; strongly calcareous with lime coating pebbles; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

C2--22 to 40 inches; pale yellow (2.5Y 8/2) stratified gravelly loam and gravelly clay loam, mixed light gray (2.5Y 7/2) and pale yellow (2.5Y 7/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few fine roots; 15 to 20 percent gravel; many old root channels; strongly calcareous; moderately alkaline; clear boundary.

C3--40 to 58 inches; pale yellow (5Y 8/2) very gravelly loam, very pale yellow (2.5Y 8/2) moist; massive; slightly hard, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few roots; 55 percent gravel; strongly calcareous; moderately alkaline; abrupt boundary.

R--58 inches; hard limestone.

TYPE LOCATION: Granite County, Montana; 650 feet north and 1,500 feet east of SW corner of sec. 19, T.7N., R.13W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to limestone bedrock is more than 40 inches. Volume of rock fragments ranges from 5 to 30 percent in the upper 40 inches of pedon and increases with increased depth below 40 inches. Estimated CaC03 equivalent including 3/4 inch gravel is 40 to 70 percent below depth of 10 inches. The hue is 10YR through 5Y. Reppart soils are usually moist but are dry for periods of as long as one month in July or August. Mean annual soil temperature is 42 to 46 degrees F. Average summer soil temperature is 55 to 59 degrees F. under grass or 45 to 47 degrees F. under dense forest canopy.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Reppart soils formed under dense conifer forest over limestone bedrock at elevations ranging between 5,000 and 6,500 feet. Mean annual precipitation is 18 to 22 inches. Mean annual temperature is between 40 and 44 degrees F. and mean summer temperature is less than 60 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Duncom, Sicklesteets, Skaggs and Trapper soils and the competing Hughesville soils. Duncom and Skaggs soils have mollic epipedons and overlie bedrock at depths shallower than 20 and 40 inches respectively. Sicklesteets and Trapper soils have argillic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; moderately permeable.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for timber production, for grazing and for watershed protection. Vegetation is Douglas-fir and/or lodgepole pine with understory of huckleberry, snowberry, Oregongrape and pine reedgrass. Other grasses spread rapidly on cutover or burned over areas.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Reppart soils occur in timbered limestone areas of southwestern Montana. They are moderately extensive.

REMARKS
The 3/2008 description reflects a change in classification from Fine-loamy, carbonatic Ustic Eutrocryepts to Fine-loamy, carbonatic Ustic Calcicryepts due to revision of the cryepts great groups and subgroups. The competing series section was not updated and should be reviewed after all the cryepts have been re-classified.
