RODAD SERIES

The Rodad series consists of very shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from sedimentary rocks. Rodad soils are on hills, mountain slopes and pediments. Slopes are 8 to 50 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 150 mm and mean annual temperature is about 12 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic, shallow Typic Haplargids

TYPICAL PEDON: Rodad very channery sandy loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 5 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very channery sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate thin platy structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine, fine and medium interstitial and vesicular pores; 40 percent channers; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 10 cm thick)

A2--5 to 20 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very channery loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate thin platy structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine, common medium roots; many very fine and fine interstitial and tubular pores; 35 percent channers; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 8 cm thick)

Bt1--20 to 18 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very channery loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine, common medium roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 40 percent channers; common faint clay films on ped faces and lining pores; few fine carbonate-silica pendants on rock fragments; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 13 cm thick)

Bt2--18 to 30 cm; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) very channery clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common very fine to medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; 55 percent channers; common faint clay films on ped faces and lining pores; common fine carbonate-silica pendants on rock fragments; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 25 cm thick)

Cr--30 cm; fractured siltstone; common roots in fractures in upper part.

TYPE LOCATION: Esmeralda County, Nevada; in the Goldfield Hills; about 2,400 feet south and 900 feet west of the northeast corner, section l5, T. 4 S., R. 42 E.; USGS Ralston 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 37 degrees 35 minutes 38 seconds N and longitude 117 degrees 14 minutes 45 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 37.5940000 latitude, -117.2458333 longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually dry, moist in some part for short periods during winter and early spring months and for 10 to 20 days cumulative between July and October due to convection storms, typic aridic soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 12 to 15 degrees C.
Depth to soft rock: 10 to 36 cm.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.
Carbonates: Ranges from slightly effervescent to violently effervescent.

Particle-size control section - Percent clay: Averages 27 to 35 percent.
Rock fragments: 35 to 60 percent, mainly channers and angular gravel.

A horizon
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR.
Value: 5 through 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 3 or 4.

Bt horizon
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR.
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 3 through 6.
Clay: Average 30 to 40 percent.
Texture: Averages clay loam; subhorizons of clay are common.
Rock fragments: 35 to 60 percent.
Structure: Subangular blocky or granular.
Other features: Rock structure commonly is retained in the
lower part. Lime and silica pendants are in some pedons.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Blappert, Cruzspring, Mulespring and Vindicator series.

Blappert and Vindicator soils have l8 to 27 percent clay in the particle-size control section. Cruzspring soils have 12 to 18 percent clay in the control section. Mulespring soils have a paralithic contact at 36 to 50 cm.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Rodad series consists of very shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from siltstone, shale and related rocks. Rodad soils are on hills, mountain slopes and pediments. Slopes are 8 to 50 percent. Elevations are 1,302 to 2,475 meters. The mean annual precipitation is 125 to 200 mm; the mean annual temperature is 11 to 13 degrees C. The frost-free season is 120 to 180 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Entero, Slatery and Theriot soils. Entero soils have an aridic moisture regime that borders on xeric. Slatery soils lack an argillic horizon. Theriot soils have carbonatic mineralogy and lack an argillic horizon.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; rapid runoff; moderately low saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly galleta, Indian ricegrass, shadscale, Anderson wolfberry, bottlebrush squirreltail, desert needlegrass, scattered Mexican cliffrose and Joshua trees.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South-central Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 29.
