ROEMER SERIES

The Roemer series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained, moderately slowly permeable soils formed in sandy and loamy sediments. These soils are on undulating uplands. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, siliceous, active, hyperthermic Arenic Epiaqualfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Roemer fine sand--rangeland.
(Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 3 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) fine sand, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; single grained; loose; many fine roots; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

E--3 to 30 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) fine sand, white (10YR 8/2) dry; single grained; loose; few fine roots; common fine distinct yellow (10YR 7/6) iron concentrations; strongly acid; clear irregular boundary. (13 to 38 inches thick)

Btg1--30 to 39 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) sandy clay loam, white (10YR 8/2) dry; weak coarse blocky structure; friable, hard; few fine roots; few faint clay films on surface of peds and clay bridging of sand grains; many medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) iron concentrations; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (7 to 26 inches thick)

Btg2--39 to 61 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) fine sandy loam, white (10YR 8/2) dry; weak coarse blocky structure; friable, hard; few fine roots; few faint clay films on surface of peds and clay bridging of sand grains; many coarse distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) iron concentrations; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 24 inches thick)

BC--61 to 84 inches; light gray (10YR 6/1) loamy fine sand, light gray (10YR 7/1) dry; structureless; very friable, slightly hard; many coarse distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and common fine prominent red (2.5YR 4/6) iron concentrations; moderately acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Calhoun County, Texas; 11.2 miles east of Seadrift; 0.3 mile east of intersection of Texas Highway 185 and Farm Road 1289; 160 feet south of right-of-way fence in depression.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness is more than 80 inches. Thickness of the A and E horizons ranges from 20 to 40 inches thick.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is fine sand or loamy fine sand. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid.

The E horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 6 to 8, and chroma of 2. Texture is fine sand or loamy fine sand. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid. Iron concentration range from few to common, fine to medium, in shades of yellow or brown.

The Bt horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 1 or 2. Iron concentrations range from few to many, fine to coarse, in shades of brown, red, and yellow. Texture of the upper 20 inches is fine sandy loam, but some part of some pedons ranges to sandy clay loam. Average clay content of the particle-size control section is 10 to 18 percent. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to moderately acid.

The C horizon has the same color range as the Bt horizon. Texture is fine sand, loamy fine sand, or fine sandy loam.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family. Similar soils are Boca, Felda, and Pinellas series. Boca and Felda soils are saturated and moist for longer periods of time. In addition, Boca soils are 20 to 40 inches thick over limestone. Felda soils have neutral to slightly alkaline reaction in the Bt horizons. Pinellas soils have calcareous B horizons.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Roemer soils are in concave parts of an undulating landscape. Slope gradients are less than 3 percent. The soil formed in sandy and loamy sediments. Mean annual temperature is 70 to 72 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 36 to 46 inches. The Thornthwaite P-E index ranges from 46 to 62.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Dianola, Portalto, and Rahal soils. Dianola and Rahal soils are on the same position in the landcape. Dianola soils are sandy throughout and Rahal soils have a clayey particle-size control section. Portalto soils are mapped in a complex with Roemer soils, are slightly higher in the landscape and have a grossarenic surface layer.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Permeability is moderately slow. Runoff is negligble. Water is ponded on the surface for a few days after heavy rains and a water table is perched above the Bt horizon for a few days to one month. The soil is saturated during the cool season in most years.

USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and pasture. Native vegetation includes seacoast bluestem, switchgrass, indiangrass, panicum and paspalum species, marshhay cordgrass, sedges and running live oak. Pastures are mainly improved bermudagrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central part of the gulf coast of Texas. The series is of moderate extent.
