RUNE SERIES

The Rune series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in mixed alluvium. Rune soils are on flood plains and alluvial fans, and have slopes of 0 to 8 percent. The average annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 53 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive, mesic Cumulic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Rune loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted)

A1--0 to 2 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; weak thin platy structure parting to weak very fine granular; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many fine roots; many fine interstitial pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 11 inches thick)

A2--2 to 14 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many fine and very fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear smooth boundary. (8 to 14 inches thick)

A3--14 to 23 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine and very fine roots; few very fine and fine tubular pores; common thin pressure faces; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (combined thickness of the A horizon is 15 to 40 inches)

BC--23 to 60 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) clay, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular angular blocky; very hard, firm, sticky and very plastic; common very fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; many thin pressure faces; common fine distinct pink (5YR 7/3) lime filaments; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

TYPE LOCATION: Yavapai County, Arizona; 0.5 of a mile east and .2 mile south of northwest corner of sec. 6, T. 22 N., R. 7 W.

Soil temperature - 51 to 58 degrees F.

Salinity- Less than 2 mmhos/cm.

A horizon - Hue: 2.5YR or 5YR.
Value: 4 or 5 dry, 2.5 or 3 moist.
Chroma: 2, 3, or 4 dry, 2 or 3 moist.
Texture: Silty clay, loam, silty clay loam, clay loam (15 to 40 percent clay).
Reaction: Slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
Carbonates: Generally disseminated.

BC horizon - Hue: 2.5YR or 5YR.
Value: 4 or 5 dry, 3 or 4 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry and moist.
Texture: Silty clay, clay loam, clay (35 to 55 percent clay).
Reaction: Slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
Carbonates: Segregated lime filaments.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bagley (AZ) and Jacques (AZ) series.. Jacques soils have hues of 7.5YR or 10YR and usually lack free carbonates in the control section. Bagley soils have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Rune soils are on flood plains and alluvial fans. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent but are dominantly 1 to 3 percent. These soils formed in stratified mixed alluvium from shale, sandstone, limestone, pyroclastics and basalt. These soils are at elevations ranging from 4,700 to 6,500 feet. The climate is semiarid with an average annual precipitation ranging from 12 to 16 inches. Precipitation comes as gentle rains and snow in the winter and as thunderstorms in July, August and September. The mean annual temperature ranges from 49 to 56 degrees F. The mean temperature in July is about 71 degrees F. and 31 degrees F.
in December. Frost-free period is 120 to 180 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Boysag, Dye, Epikom, Navajo, Partri, Pastura, Purner, Tours, and Winona series and the competing Lynx soils. Boysag, Dye, Epikom, Purner and Winona soils are all shallow to bedrock. Partri soils have an argillic horizon and a calcic horizon and Pastura soils have an argillic horizon and a calcic horizon and Pastura soils have a petrocalcic horizon at a shallow depth. Tours soils are fine-loamy and Navajo soils have intersecting slickensides.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; very slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used only for grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is mainly blue grama, western wheatgrass, spike muhly, squirreltail, rabbitbrush and snakeweed.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Widely distributed throughout north-central Arizona and east-central New Mexico. The Rune series is moderately extensive. MLRAs 35 & 70C. Use in MLRA 70C in New Mexico should be discontinued.
