REDBULL SERIES


The Redbull series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium derived from red calcareous sandstone. Redbull soils are in valleys. Slopes are 3 to 15 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches, and mean annual air temperature is about 44 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Aridic Calciustepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Redbull silt loam in rangeland, on a northwest facing, 3 percent slope in western wheatgrass, at an elevation of 5250 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted)

A--0 to 1 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 4/4) silt loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; weak very fine and fine platy structure; moderately hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine roots; few very fine and common fine pores; about 10 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; very slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); gradual wavy boundary. (1 to 2 inches thick)

Bw--1 to 9 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and moderately plastic; very few very fine roots; common fine pores; about 13 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)

Bk1--9 to 25 inches; yellowish red (5YR 5/6) loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; very few very fine roots; few very fine pores; about 18 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; strongly effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); gradual wavy boundary. (7 to 25 inches thick)

Bk2--25 to 39 inches; reddish yellow (5YR 6/6) very fine sandy loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very friable, non-sticky and non-plastic; very few very fine and coarse roots; very few very fine pores; about 10 percent gravel; carbonates disseminated and as pendants on the undersides of some gravel fragments; about 13 percent calcium carbonate equivalent;violently effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.5); gradual wavy boundary.

BCk--39 to 51 inches; yellowish red (5YR 4/6) very fine sandy loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; about 10 percent gravel; carbonates disseminated and as pendants on the undersides of some gravel fragments; about 10 percent calcium carbonate equivalent;violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); gradual wavy boundary. (Combined Bk2 and BCk horizons 15 to 44 inches thick)

Cr--51 to 60 inches; soft, red calcareous sandstone.

TYPE LOCATION: Johnson County, Wyoming; About 2,110 feet north and 170 feet west southeast corner of Section 2, T.47 N., R83 W.; lat. 44 degrees 4 minutes 8 seconds N. and long. 106 degrees 47 minutes 34 seconds W., NAD 1983. Robinson Canyon NE USGS topographic quadrangle.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Mean annual soil temperature: 44 to 47 degrees F.
Depth to paralithic contact: 40 to 60 inches to sandstone.
Depth secondary calcium carbonates: 4 to 12 inches.
Particle-size control section (weighted average):
Clay content: 12 to 18 percent.
Rock Fragments: 0 to 15 percent gravels.

Hue: 2.5YR or 5YR
Value: 4 or 5 dry; 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 3 to 6
Texture: silt loam

Value: 4 to 6 dry; 4 or 5 moist

Texture: loam, silt loam or very fine sandy loam
Clay content: 10 to 18 percent
Rock Fragments: 0 to 25
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 5 to 18 percent
Reaction: slightly alkaline to strongly alkaline

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Amesha, Kalsted and Lakebench series.
Amesha: hues of 7.5YR or yellower.
Kalsted: has hues of 10YR or yellower.
Lakebench: does not have a paralithic contact above a depth of 60 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: alluvium derived from red calcareous sandstone
Landform: valley
Slopes: 3 to 15 percent
Elevation: 5200 to 5500 feet
Mean annual air temperature: 42 to 45 degrees F.
Mean annual precipitation: 15 to 19 inches.
Frost-free period: 70 to 105 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Skelridge, Bloodstone, Riedel, Abac (dry phase) and Fetterman series.
Fetterman soils are on backslopes of scarps and hogbacks; have a paralithic contact between 20 and 40 inches.
Abac (dry phase) soils are on backslopes of scarps and hogbacks; have a paralithic contact within 20 inches.
Riedel soils are on gently sloping to steep sedimentary uplands; have a paralithic contact between 20 and 40 inches. Bloodstone soils are on backslopes of scarps and hogbacks; have a lithic contact within 20 inches.
Skelridge soils are on backslopes and shoulders of high hills and backslopes of scarps and hogbacks; have a paralithic contact between 20 and 40 inches.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; low to medium runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for irrigated and dryland grain production and rangeland. The potential native vegetation is crested wheatgrass, fringe sage, and western wheatgrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Redbull soils are of small extent in northeastern Wyoming.

REMARKS: The soil is tentatively classified as coarse-loamy, pending lab results.
