SALLYANN SERIES

the Sallyann series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in loess and residuum from basalt and andesite. Sallyann soils are on uplands and have slopes of 7 to 90 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 26 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 48 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, isotic, mesic Vitrandic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Sallyann stony ashy loam, forested. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--0 to 1 inch; very slightly decomposed needles, leaves, cones, and wood; strongly acid (pH 5.5); abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 1.5 inches thick)

A1--1 to 5 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) stony ashy loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak thin platy structure parting to strong fine and very fine granular; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine interstitial and very fine tubular pores; some worm channels and casts; few stones, 5 percent cobblestones, 5 percent pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.2); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 7 inches thick)

A2--5 to 10 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) ashy loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and few medium roots; common fine tubular pores; some worm channels and casts; few uncoated silt grains; 5 percent cobblestones, about 12 percent pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 6 inches thick)

Bw--10 to 15 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) gravelly ashy loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and few medium roots; common very fine and few fine tubular pores; few faint clay films on peds and in channels; 5 percent cobblestones, 20 percent angular pebbles; neutral (pH 6.6); clear wavy boundary. (4 to 12 inches thick)

Bt1--15 to 23 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/3) cobbly clay loam, very dark brown (7.5YR 2/2) moist; moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; common faint clay films on peds and in pores; 15 percent cobblestones, 20 percent pebbles; neutral (pH 6.8); clear wavy boundary. (7 to 18 inches thick)

Bt2--23 to 32 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) cobbly loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many faint clay films on peds and in pores; 20 percent cobblestones, 25 percent gravel; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt irregular boundary. (5 to 18 inches thick)

R--32 inches; hard bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: Idaho County, Idaho; about 4 miles southwest of Harpster, north of the road in the SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 18, T. 30 N., R. 4 E., on a 61 percent west-facing slope at 2,075 feet elevation.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to bedrock ranges from 20 to 40 inches. The soils are usually moist but are dry in all parts between depths of 4 and 12 inches for 45 to 60 days in most years during late summer. The mean annual soil temperature ranges from 47 degrees to 52 degrees F. The argillic horizon contains 35 to 60 percent rock fragments by volume. The solum is slightly acid or neutral throughout. Base saturation is less than 75 percent.

When undisturbed an O2 horizon up to 1 inch thick is present.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 3 through 5 dry, 2 through 4 moist and chroma of 3 or 4. Rock fragments range from 35 to 60 percent by volume.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bobbitt and Setill (T) series. Bobbitt soils do not have Bw horizons. Setill soils have densic material at 25 to 35 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Sallyann soils are on uplands and have slopes of 7 to 90 percent. The soils formed in loess and residuum from basalt or andesite. Elevations range from 1,300 to 3,800 feet. The climate is subhumid microthermal The mean annual precipitation is 24 to 28 inches. The frost-free period is about 120 to 150 days. The mean annual temperature ranges from 49 degrees to 54 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Bluesprin soils and the Gwin soils. Gwin soils are shallow to bedrock.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; medium and rapid runoff, moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for production of forest products, hay, and pasture. Dominant vegetation is ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir, with short shrubs, grasses, and forbs.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Idaho County, Idaho. The soils are moderately extensive.
