(Combined thickness of the Bk1 and Bk2 horizons is 61 to 81 cm).
2C--117 to 165 cm; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) gravelly sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 1 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; 25 percent gravel; very slightly effervescent; very strongly alkaline (pH 9.5).

COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Grandview series. Grandview soils do not have horizons of sandy material within the series control section and have mean annual soil temperature of 11 to 13 degrees C.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Saltydog soils are on alluvial flats. These soils formed in alluvium and lacustrine deposits derived from limestone and welded tuff. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Elevations range from 1,387 to 1,448 meters. The mean annual precipitation is 125 to 180 mm, the mean annual temperature is 11.5 to 14 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 120 to 160 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Ambush,
Geer, and
Panacker soils. Ambush soils occur on alluvial flats and have 20 to 40 percent carbonate-cemented nodules in the calcic horizon. Geer soils occur on alluvial plains and do not have a calcic horizon. Panacker soils do not have cambic horizons and have less than 27 percent total clay.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained;; high saturated hydraulic conductivity. There is a thin perched water table from about 107 to 127 cm for a brief period in the spring during wet years. Internal free water occurrence is very thin, deep and very transitory or transitory.
USE AND VEGETATION: Saltydog soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The potential native vegetation includes Indian ricegrass, galleta, greenmolly kochia, shadscale, and bud sagebrush. This pedon is correlated to ecological site R029XY120NV, Saline Terrace 5-8 P.Z.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South-central Nevada. These soils are not extensive with about 6,700 acres of the series mapped to date. MLRA 29.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Lincoln County, Nevada, North Part, 2006. The name is coined.
