SCARINE SERIES
The Scarine series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium derived from volcanic rocks. The Scarine soils are on inset fans and along drainageways. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 200 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 10 degrees C.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Xerofluventic Haplocambids
TYPICAL PEDON: Scarine fine sandy loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A--0 to 8 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) fine sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3), moist; moderate thin platy structure; very friable, soft, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and fine roots and common medium roots throughout; common very fine vesicular and tubular pores; 5 percent fine gravel and 1 percent medium and coarse gravel; strongly alkaline, (pH 8.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 18 cm thick)
Bw1--8 to 23 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) fine sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3), moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable, soft, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine through coarse roots and many very fine roots throughout; common fine tubular and many very fine tubular pores; 3 percent fine gravel 2 percent medium and coarse gravel; very slightly effervescent; strongly alkaline, (pH 8.6); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick)
Bw2--23 to 53 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3), moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable, soft, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine through coarse roots throughout; common fine tubular and many very fine tubular pores; 5 percent fine gravel and 5 percent medium and coarse gravel; very slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline, pH (8.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 38 cm thick)
Bk1--53 to 76 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) stratified gravelly fine sandy loam to sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3), moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable, soft, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine through medium roots throughout; common fine through coarse tubular pores and many very fine tubular pores; 7 fine gravel and 8 percent medium and coarse gravel; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline, pH (8.4); clear smooth boundary. (20 to 50 cm)
Bk2--76 to 155 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) stratified very gravelly coarse sand to gravelly fine sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), moist; massive; very friable, soft, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine through coarse roots and common very fine roots throughout; common very fine and fine tubular and common very fine interstitial pores; 10 percent fine gravel and 15 percent medium and coarse gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline, (pH 8.4).
TYPE LOCATION: Nye County, Nevada; in the Nevada Test and Training Range in Cactus Flat near Breen Creek, about 500 feet south and 500 east feet of the northwest corner of section 1, T. 2 S., R. 48 E. USGS Breen Creek 7.5 topographic quadrangle; latitude 37 degrees, 47 minutes, 48.2 seconds N and longitude 116 degrees, 33 minutes, 46.1 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 37.7966667 latitude, -116.5794444.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Moist in winter and spring and intermittently moist for 10 to 20 days (cumulative) in the upper part of the moisture control section between July and September due to convection storms; aridic soil moisture regime that borders on xeric.
Mean annual soil temperature: 12 to 15 degrees C.
Organic matter: An irregular decrease
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.
Particle-size control section - Clay content: Average 6 to 12 percent.
Rock fragments: Average 5 to 35 percent, mainly gravel. Lithology of fragments is volcanic rocks such as tuff and andesite.

Texture: Fine sandy loam or loam.
Consistence: Nonsticky to slightly sticky, nonplastic to slightly plastic.
Bk horizons
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 3 or 4 moist

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Scarine soils are on inset fans and along drainageways. These soils formed in alluvium derived from volcanic rocks. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. Elevations are 1,329 to 2,075 meters. The climate is cool, semiarid with warm summers and moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is 175 to 300 mm; Mean annual temperature is 9 to 14 degrees C., and frost-free season is 90 to 130 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Leo,
Lyx and
Veet soils. All of these soils are loamy skeletal.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained, low runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly big sagebrush and fourwing saltbush.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western and central, Nevada, MLRA 29. These soils are not extensive.
