COMPETING SERIES: These are the Burnscreek, Fantz, Oland and Woolstalf series. Fantz soils are moderately deep. Oland soils contain more than 18 percent clay in the particle-size control section. Woolstalf soils have an O horizon and are 40 to 60 inches to paralithic contact.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Schiller soils are on hill backslopes, footslopes and canyon walls at elevations of 2,700 to 6,000 feet. These soils formed in colluvium from granitic rocks, aphanitic equivalents and prophyry. Slopes range from 15 to 90 percent. The average annual precipitation is 13 to 22 inches. The average annual temperature is 45 to 51 degrees F. The frost-free period is 90 to 150 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Kisky, Olaton, and Shimo soils. Kisky soils are shallow and on summits and shoulders. Olaton soils are coarse-loamy and on similar geomorphic positions. Shimo soils are moderately deep and on similar geomorphic positions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; medium to rapid runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Schiller soils are used mainly for rangeland and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is xeric big sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, Idaho fescue and bluebunch wheatgrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West-central Idaho. MLRA 10. Schiller soils are not extensive.
