SCHODSON SERIES

The Schodson series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils on low terraces. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. They formed in mixed alluvium. The mean annual precipitation is about 9 inches. The mean annual air temperature is about 47 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Xeric Aquicambids

TYPIFYING PEDON: Schodson sandy loam, cultivated. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Ap--0 to 9 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2, crushed) moist; very weak very fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; 5 percent gravel; very slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)

Bw--9 to 25 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) pale brown (10YR 6/3, crushed) sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; very weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure parting to very weak very fine granular; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few roots; many very fine irregular and common very fine tubular pores; 5 percent gravel; noncalcareous except few pores are very slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); clear smooth boundary. (14 to 30 inches thick)

2C1--25 to 32 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loamy coarse sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), brown (10YR 4/3, crushed) moist; common fine distinct brown (7.5YR 5/2 and 10YR 4/3) redox accumulations, that are dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few roots; common very fine tubular pores; 10 percent gravel; moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)

3C2--32 to 43 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) coarse sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; common coarse distinct brown (7.5YR 5/2 and 10YR 4/3) redox accumulations, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; single grained; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine irregular pores; 7 percent gravel; moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 18 inches thick)

3C3--43 to 60 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) coarse sand, gray (10YR 5/1) moist; few coarse distinct brown (7.5YR 5/2) redox concentrations, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; single grained; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine irregular pores; 7 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

TYPE LOCATION: Minidoka County, Idaho; 1/8 mile west of Rupert; 15 feet east of fence and 340 feet north of county road; 1,400 feet northeast of SW corner of SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 19, T.9S., R.24E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 52 degrees F. Depth to bedrock is over 60 inches. Depth to the sandy 2C horizon is 20 to 40 inches. Depth to redox features is 20 to 40 inches. An apparent water table is at 30 to 40 inches from June to August. The particle-size control section average 5 to 10 percent clay and 65 to 75 percent sand. It has 0 to 5 percent calcium carbonate throughout.

The Ap or A horizon has value of 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3 moist or dry. It is noneffervescent or slightly effervescent.

The Bw horizon has value of 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist and chroma of 3 or 4 moist or dry. It is noneffervescent or very slightly effervescent.

The 2C and 3C horizon has value of 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist and chroma of 1 to 3. It is loamy sand, loamy fine sand, loamy coarse sand or coarse sand.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Schodson soils are on low terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 1 percent. Elevations range from 3,000 to 4,400 feet. The soils formed in stratified alluvium from mixed rock sources. The mean annual precipitation is 8 to 11 inches. The average freeze-free period is 125 to 140 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Decker, Tindahay, and Wodskow soils. These soils have a calcic horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained; moderately rapid permeability in the upper part and rapid below. A summer water table fluctuates between depths of 30 and 40 inches from June to August. Water tables are induced from irrigation.

USE AND VEGETATION: Schodson soils are used for irrigated cropland, pasture and rangeland. The dominant crops are sugar beets, barley, wheat and alfalfa hay. Native vegetation is bluegrass, hairgrass, wheatgrass and sedge.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South-central Idaho. The series is inextensive.
