SCULLIN SERIES

The Scullin series consists of moderately deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in material weathered from limestone or dolomitic limestone of Ordovician age. These soils are on very gently sloping to sloping convex uplands in the Grand Prairie. Slopes are 2 to 6 percent. Mean annual precipitation is 37 inches. Mean annual temperature is 63 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, active, thermic Udic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Scullin loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

A1--0 to 6 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; strong medium granular structure; hard, friable; contains 10 percent hard limestone gravel; slightly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (4 to 12 inches thick)

BA--6 to 11 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/2) flaggy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; strong very fine blocky structure; hard, firm; contains 25 percent limestone and chert fragments; slightly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 12 inches thick)

Bt1--11 to 18 inches; dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) clay, dark reddish brown (2.5YR 2/4) moist; strong very fine blocky structure; extremely hard, very firm; thin clay films on peds; contains 5 percent limestone and chert fragments; slightly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 12 inches thick)

Bt2--18 to 30 inches; dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) very flaggy clay, dark reddish brown (2.5YR 2/4) moist; strong; very fine blocky structure; extremely hard, very firm; contains 50 percent limestone and chert fragments; thin clay films on peds; slightly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (5 to 28 inches thick)

R--30 to 32 inches; limestone bedrock that is fractured in the upper part at 3 to 12 inch intervals with cracks up to 2 inches wide.

TYPE LOCATION: Pontotoc County, Oklahoma; about l8 miles south of Ada on State Highway 99; 810 feet north and 60 feet west of the southeast corner of sec. 23, T. 1 N., R. 6 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and depth to bedrock ranges from 20 to 40 inches. Thickness of the mollic epipedon is less than 20 inches.

The A horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is loam, silt loam, clay loam, flaggy loam, flaggy silt loam, or flaggy clay loam. Content of coarse flat fragments of chert, limestone, or dolomitic limestone less than 76 mm in diameter ranges from 5 to 30 percent by volume. Reaction is moderately or slightly acid.

The BA horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is loam, clay loam, flaggy loam, or flaggy clay loam. Content of coarse flat fragments of chert, limestone, or dolomitic limestone less than 76 mm in diameter ranges from 5 to 35 percent by volume. Reaction is moderately or slightly acid.

The Bt horizons have hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 6. It is clay, clay loam, flaggy clay, flaggy clay loam, very flaggy clay, or very flaggy clay loam. Content of coarse flat fragments of chert, limestone, or dolomitic limestone less than 76 mm in diameter ranges from 5 to 50 percent by volume. The weighted average of limestone or dolomitic limestone fragments within the B horizon ranges from 10 to 35 percent by volume. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to moderately alkaline.

The R layer is hard fractured limestone or dolomitic limestone.

COMPETING SERIES: These are Anocon, Bexar, Frankirk, and Lawton series in the same family. Soils in similar families are Acove, Bluegrove, Brico, Bronte, Fulshear, Katemcy, Lindy, and Rumple series. Acove, Bluegrove, Bronte, Fulshear, Katemcy, and Lindy soils lack a mollic epipedon. Anocon, Frankrik, and Lawton soils have a solum more than 40 inches thick. Bexar soils are dry for longer periods. Brico soils have more than 35 percent coarse fragments.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Scullin soils are on very gently sloping to sloping convex uplands in the Grand Prairie. Slopes are 2 to 6 percent. They formed in material weathered from limestone or dolomitic limestone of Ordovician age. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 34 to 40 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 62 to 64 degrees F. Thornthwaite annual P-E indices range from 54 to 64. Frost free days range from 210 to 230. Elevation ranges from 600 to 1200 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Claremore and Shidler series. Claremore and Shidler soils occur on similar landscapes as the Scullin soils, have a solum less than 20 inches thick, and a loamy control section. In addition, Shidler soils do not have Bt horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; runoff is medium on 2 to 5 percent slopes and high on 5 to 6 percent slopes; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Dominantly used for native range. Native vegetation is tall grass prairie.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Grand Prairie of Oklahoma. The series is of moderate extent.
