GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Secondcreek soils are on nearly level to slightly depressional areas along the Cuba Moraine. Slope ranges from 0 to 1 percent. Thee soils formed in lacustrine deposits and the underlying till of Illinoian age. Mean annual precipitation ranges from about 940 to 1170 mm (37 to 46 inches.) Mean annual air temperature ranges from about 9 to 14 degrees C (48 to 57 degrees F). Frost-free period is 155 to 225 days. Elevation is 290 to 317 meters (950 to 1040 feet) above mean sea level.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Blanchester, Clermont, Jonesboro, Rossmoyne, Schaffer, and Westboro soils. The poorly drained Blanchester soils are on similar landscape positions and have a thinner, dark colored surface layer. The Clermont, Jonesboro, Rossmoyne, Schaffer, and Westboro soils formed in loess and the underlying till. The poorly drained Clermont soils are on similar landscape positions and have an ochric epipedon. The moderately well drained Jonesboro and Rossmoyne soils and the somewhat poorly drained Schaffer and Westboro soils are on higher landscape positions.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Very poorly drained. The depth to the top of an intermittent apparent high water table ranges from 30 cm (1.0 foot) above the surface to 15 cm (0.5 foot) below the surface between December and May in normal years. The potential for surface runoff is negligible. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately low. Permeability is slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated. Principal crops are corn and soybeans. A few areas are in pasture.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Ohio; MLRA 114A. The series is of small extent.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Clinton County, Ohio, 1999.

REMARKS: This soil was formerly mapped as Patton soils (fine-silty) in Clinton County.
