Slopes are 5 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is 30 inches and the mean annual temperature is 58 degrees F.

TYPICAL PEDON: Sodabay loam--on a west facing convex slope of 25 percent under scrub oak, live oak, digger pine, California buckeye and annual grasses at 1466 feet elevation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. When described on May 15, 1979, the soil was dry to a depth of 10 inches and moist below.)

(6 to 12 inches thick)

Bt2--16 to 26 inches; light reddish brown (5YR 6/3) clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, weakly smeary, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine to coarse roots; common very fine, fine, few medium tubular and interstitial pores; common thin clay films of peds and in pores; 10 percent pebbles 2 to 50 mm in diameter; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 13 inches thick)

Bt3--26 to 41 inches; light reddish brown (5YR 6/4) clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; hard, friable, weakly smeary, sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; common fine and medium interstitial and tubular pores; common moderately thick clay films in pores and on peds; 5 percent pebbles 2 to 50 mm in diameter and 2 percent cobbles 3 to 7 inches; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); gradual smooth boundary. (9 to 18 inches thick)

Bt4--41 to 52 inches; light reddish brown (5YR 6/4) clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, weakly smeary, sticky and plastic; common very fine and fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine interstitial and tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films on peds and in pores; 5 percent pebbles 2 to 15 mm in diameter; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (7 to 13 inches thick)

BCt--52 to 63 inches; light reddish brown (5YR 6/4) gravelly clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, weakly smeary, sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine interstitial and many very fine and common fine tubular pores; common moderately thick clay films on peds and in pores; 20 percent pebbles 2 to 15 mm in diameter; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4). (9 to 16 inches thick)

Cr--63 inches, weathered pyroclastic tuff.

TYPE LOCATION: Lake County, California, 13 feet east of Soda Bay Road and 100 feet east of telephone pole No. 87; 2,200 feet north and 1,500 feet west of the south east corner of sec. 6, T. 13 N., R. 8 W.; Lucerne Quadrangle.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The solum varies from 40 to 80 inches thick. The mean annual soil temperature varies from 59 to 63 degrees F. The soil between depths of 6 and 16 inches is moist in all parts from December through March and is dry in all parts from July through October 15. It is neutral or slightly alkaline. Coarse and very coarse sand varies from 5 to 15 percent throughout. Base saturation varies from 75 to 95 percent throughout. The clay percentage decreases at 50 to 60 inches.

The A horizon is 5YR 6/3, 6/4 or 7.5YR 6/4. Moist color is 5YR 3/3, 3/4 or 7.5YR 3/4. Clay content is 10 to 20 percent. Gravel content is 5 to 15 percent. Organic matter ranges from 1 to 2 percent.

The Bt horizon is 5YR 6/3, 6/4, 6/6 or 6/8. Moist color is 5YR 3/3, 3/4, or 7.5YR 3/4. The upper part of the Bt horizon is loam or clay loam with 5 to 15 percent pebbles. It is 25 to 30 percent clay. The lower part is clay loam and is 30 to 40 percent clay. Gravel content commonly is 5 to 15 percent.

The BCt horizon is loam or clay loam and is 20 to 35 percent clay. Gravel content commonly is 15 to 25 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Academy, Burchell, Cajalco (T), Coarsegold, Honn (T), Jacinto, Modesto, Olashes, Perkins, Pleasanton, Rescue, Sobrante, Trimmer and Whitney series. All these soils except Honn soils lack amorphous properties. Academy, Cajalco, Coarsegold, Sobrante, and Trimmer soils have a lithic or paralithic contact at depths of 20 to 40 inches. Burchell soils have a moderately or strongly alkaline argillic horizon. Honn soils have umbric epipedons, 10YR or 7.5YR hues in B2t horizon, and a solum thickness of 20 to 40 inches. Jacinto, Perkins, Pleasanton and Whitney soils have 10YR hues in the argillic and 10YR hues in the surface horizon. Modesto soils have 10 to 15 percent absolute difference in clay within 3 inches from the A horizon to the B2t horizon, have more than 25 percent medium coarse and very coarse sand, and are somewhat poorly drained. Olashes soils have Bt horizon with hues of 10YR or 7.5YR.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Sodabay soils occur on volcanic hills. Slopes are 5 to 50 percent. Elevations vary from 1,350 to 2,200 feet. The soils are formed in amorphous materials derived primarily from volcanic ash, dacite and pyroclastic tuff and breccia. The climate is subhumid with hot dry summers and cool moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 25 to 45 inches. Mean January temperature is 42 degrees F; mean July temperature is 68 degrees F, mean annual air temperature is 55 to 59 degrees F. The frost-free season is 150 to 200 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Arrowhead, Benridge, Bottlerock, and Glenview soils. Arrowhead, Bottlerock, Camelback, and Glenview soils all have mesic soil temperatures, and have obsidian fragments throughout. Benridge soils are fine.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to rapid runoff, moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for walnut production, homesite development, wildlife and watershed. Natural vegetation consists of scrub oak, interior, live oak, digger pine, manzanita, California buckeye, chamis, and annual grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Clear lake volcanic field. The series is not extensive.
