TYPE LOCATION: Pennington County, South Dakota; about 8 miles northwest of Deerfield, 1650 feet south and 1500 feet east of the northwest corner of sec. 2, T. 1 N., R. 1 E.; USGS Preacher Spring, South Dakota topographic quadrangle; lat. 43 degrees 59 minutes 29 seconds N. and long. 103 degrees 58 minutes 8 seconds W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mollic epipedon is 10 to 30 centimeters thick and constitutes over one-third the thickness of soil above bedrock. The depth to bedrock ranges from 25 to 51 centimeters. Clay content ranges from 15 to 27 percent. The soil has a Udic soil moisture regime.
The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5 and 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is gravelly silt loam, gravelly loam or loam. Reaction is neutral to moderately alkaline.
The Bk horizon has hue of 2.5YR, 5YR, 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6 and 3 to 5 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4. It is very gravelly loam or very channery loam. Reaction is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline. Some pedons have a C horizon.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Soholt soils are on summits and shoulders of mountain valleys. These soils formed in residuum from limestone and calcareous sandstone. Slope ranges from 2 to 25 percent. Elevations range from 6200 to 7200 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 20 to 28 centimeters. The mean annual air temperature is 40 to 45 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Jenksdraw (T) soils. The moderately deep Jenksdraw soils are on backslopes.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability; runoff is very low to high depending on slope.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland. Western wheatgrass, bearded wheatgrass, and needleandthread.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Black Hills (MLRA 62) of South Dakota and Wyoming. The series is of small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Denver, Colorado.
SERIES PROPOSED: Lawrence County, South Dakota, 4/2000. The name is from Soholt Draw about 4 miles east of the type location.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 30 centimeters (A and Bk horizons).
Calcic horizon - the zone from 10 to 30 centimeters (Bk horizon).
