(5 to 7 inches thick)

2Bt2--15 to 20 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) extremely cobbly sandy clay loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) dry; strong fine and medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine dendritic tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds and pore linings; 5 percent stones, 35 percent cobbles and 30 percent gravels; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

2Bt3--20 to 45 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) extremely cobbly sandy clay loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) dry; strong very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine, and few medium dendritic tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds and pore linings; 5 percent stones, 25 percent cobbles, and 45 percent gravels; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (15 to 25 inches thick)

2Bkq--45 to 60 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) extremely cobbly loamy sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) dry; single grain; nonsticky and nonplastic; discontinuous moderate cementing by silica between cobbles and gravels; fine calcium carbonate (2 percent) finely disseminated, slightly effervescent; 5 percent stones 35 percent cobbles and 40 percent gravels; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear wavy boundary.

TYPE LOCATION: Crook County, Oregon; 1849 feet west and 609 feet north of the south east corner of section 1 T 18 S, R 22 E.( Latitude 44 degrees 2 minutes 7.9 seconds N, Longitude 120 degrees 1 minute 33.8 seconds W. NAD 83) Liggett Table, Oregon USGS quadrangle; UTM 0738296 meters E, 4880121 meters N, Zone 10 NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Spikedriver soils are dry for 70 to 100 consecutive days (aridic soil moisture regime). Depth to the 2Bt horizon is 10 to 15 inches. The mollic epipedon is 10 to 15 inches thick. The particle-size control section averages 15 to 35 percent clay, and rock fragments range from 35 to 80 percent. Rock fragments are rounded in shape. Depth to bedrock is greater than 60 inches. It is neutral or slightly alkaline.

The A horizon has a value of 3 moist, 4 or 5 dry and a chroma of 2 or 3 moist and dry. It is an ashy sandy loam with 10 to 15 percent clay. It has 5 to 40 percent total rock fragments ranging from 0 to 15 percent stones, 5 to 25 percent cobbles and 5 to 30 percent gravels. It has 5 to 20 percent glass and acid oxalate aluminum plus one-half the iron is 0.2 to 0.5 percent.

The 2Bt1 horizon has a value of 3 moist and 5 or 6 dry and a chroma of 3 moist or dry. It is sandy loam or sandy clay loam. It has 15 to 65 percent total rock fragments with 0 to 15 percent stones, 10 to 35 percent cobbles and 10 to 45 percent gravels.

The 2Bt2 horizon has a value of 3 or 4 moist, 5or 6 dry and a chroma of 3 moist and 3 through 5 dry. It is sandy loam or sandy clay loam. It has 25 to 70 percent total rock fragments with 0 to 10 percent stones and 15 to 40 percent cobbles and 10 to 45 percent gravels.

The 2Bt3 horizon has a value of 3 to 4 moist, 6 dry and a chroma of 4 moist or dry. It is a sandy loam or sandy clay loam. It has 20 to 75 percent total rock fragments with 0 to 10 percent stones, 15 to 40 percent cobbles 15 to 45 percent gravels. Finely disseminated calcium carbonate may occur in some pedons.

The 2Bkq horizon has a value of 4 or 5 moist, 6 dry and a chroma of 4 through 6 moist and 1 through 3 dry. It is a loamy sand or sandy loam. It has 30 to 80 percent total rock fragments. It has 0 to 15 percent stones, 15 to 50 percent cobbles and 15 to 50 percent gravels.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Agentia series. Agentia soil is 20 to 40 inches deep to bedrock.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Spikedriver soils are on stream terraces at elevations of 2700 to 4,000 feet. They are found in alluvium derived from mixed igneous and sedimentary rock. Slopes are 0 to 25 percent. The climate is characterized by cool moist winters and hot dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 9 to 12 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 47 to 52 degrees F. The frost-free period is 70 to 100 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Beeman, Meadowridge, Metolius and Sorf soils. Beeman soils are sodic, and are found on flood plains and alluvial fans. Meadowridge soils are fine-loamy and are found on benches and north facing slopes. Metolius soils are coarse-loamy and are found on low terraces and flood plains. Sorf soils are fine and are found on adjacent rolling hills.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained with moderately rapid over moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Spikedriver soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The native vegetation consists of western juniper, basin big sagebrush, bluebunch wheatgrass and Thurber's needlegrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East-Central Oregon; MLRA 10. This series is not extensive.
