STIDHAM SERIES

The Stidham series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in sandy and loamy sediments on terraces of Pleistocene age. These soils are on broad nearly level to moderately sloping sandy reworked terraces in the Northern Cross Timbers (MLRA 84A). Slopes are dominantly 0 to 3 percent but range to 8 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, active, thermic Arenic Haplustalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Stidham loamy fine sand--cultivated. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 6 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) loamy fine sand, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

E--6 to 26 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) loamy fine sand, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; single grained; soft, very friable; moderately acid; clear wavy boundary. (14 to 36 inches thick)

Bt1--26 to 36 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable; clay films on faces of peds and bridging sand grains; moderately acid; diffuse smooth boundary. (6 to 16 inches thick)

Bt2--36 to 45 inches; yellow (10YR 7/6) sandy clay loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) moist; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable; clay films on faces of peds and bridging sand grains; moderately acid; diffuse smooth boundary. (0 to 16 inches thick)

BC--45 to 55 inches; yellow (10YR 7/6) fine sandy loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) moist; few fine distinct grayish brown mottles; weak coarse prismatic structure; hard, friable; moderately acid; diffuse smooth boundary. (10 to 30 inches thick)

C--55 to 70 inches; yellow (10YR 7/6) loamy fine sand, brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) moist; massive; soft, very friable; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Hughes County, Oklahoma; about 12 miles south and 2 miles east of Calvin; 200 feet south and 700 feet east of the NW corner of sec. 25, T. 4 N., R. 10 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 40 to more than 72 inches. Reaction ranges from moderately acid through strongly acid, unless limed.

The combined thickness of the A and E horizons ranges from 20 to 40 inches. The Ap or A1 horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is loamy fine sand or fine sand. The E horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 6 or 7, and chroma of 3 or 4. Texture is loamy fine sand or fine sand.

The Bt horizons have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 4 to 8. Texture is sandy clay loam or fine sandy loam with clay content ranging from 18 to 35 percent.

The BC horizon has colors similar to those in the Bt horizon. Texture is sandy clay loam, fine sandy loam, or loamy fine sand. The C horizon has colors similar to those of the Bt horizon. Texture is fine sandy loam or loamy fine sand and reaction ranges from neurtal through strongly acid.

COMPETING SERIES: The Dougherty series is the only soils in the same family. Dougherty soils have argillic horizons in hues 5YR or redder.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Stidham soils occur on nearly level to moderately sloping terraces on uplands of the Northern Cross Timbers (MLRA 84A). Slope gradients are mainly between 0 to 3 percent but range to 8 percent. They have developed in sandy or loamy Pliestocene age sediments. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 58 to 64 degrees F.; average annual precipitation ranges from 30 to 40 inches; Thornthwaite P-E indices ranges from 44 to 64. Elevation ranges from 500 to 1200 feet. Frost free days range from 200 to 230 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: In addition to the competing Dougherty, associated soils are Galey, Konawa, Stephenville, and Eufaula series. Galey and Konawa soils have a combined A horizon thickness of less than 20 inches. Stephenville soils are moderately deep over sandstone. Eufaula soils have less than 18 percent clay in the control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability. Runoff is negligible on 0 to 1 percent slopes, very low on 1 to3 percent slopes, low on 3 to 5 percent slopes and moderate on 5 to 8 percent slopes.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated to small grains, sorghums, and peanuts. Other areas are used for tame pasture or native range. Native vegetation is mainly postoak, blackjack oak, and hickory with an understory of mid and tall grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern Cross Timbers (MLRA 84A) of Central Oklahoma. The series is of moderate extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: McIntosh County, Oklahoma; 1935.

REMARKS: Soil Interpretation Record No. OK0145

Stidham soils were formerly classified in the Yellow Podzolic great soil group.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon- the zone from 0 - 26 inches (A horizon)

Albic horizon- the zone from 6 - 26 inches (E horizon)
