TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Aridic Argiustolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Tafoya stony loam-rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A--0 to 6 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) stony loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many fine roots; many fine pores; 15 percent stones, 5 percent cobbles, 10 percent pebbles; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (5 to 9 inches thick)
Bw--6 to 14 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/2) very stony silt loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine granular and moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky, plastic; many fine roots; many fine pores; 20 percent stones; 20 percent cobbles, 10 percent pebbles; neutral, clear wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)
Bt1--14 to 25 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) extremely gravelly clay, brown (7.5YR 5/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, slightly sticky, plastic; common fine roots; few fine pores; common thin clay films on peds and rock fragments; 50 percent pebbles, 10 percent cobbles; 5 percent stones; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 14 inches thick)
BC--25 to 39 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) very gravelly clay, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, plastic; few fine roots; few fine tubular pores; 50 percent fine gravel, 10 percent cobbles; neutral, clear wavy boundary. (13 to 18 inches thick)
C--39 to 46 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very gravelly sandy clay loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, plastic; few fine roots; few fine tubular pores; 30 percent pebbles, 10 percent cobbles; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (7 to 20 inches thick)
R--46 inches; igneous bedrock.
TYPE LOCATION: Colfax County, New Mexico; about 20 miles east of Maxwell; 320 feet south and 160 feet east of the NW corner of section 33, T. 27N., R.26E.
USE AND VEGETATION: Native rangeland, wildlife habitat, recreation, and watershed. Principal vegetation is blue grama, sideoats grama, little bluestem, pinyon pine, juniper, and Gambel oak.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern, New Mexico. The series is inextensive.
