TYPE LOCATION: Moffat County, Colorado; approximately 25 miles northwest of Maybell, in the SW1/4 SW1/4 SW1/4 of Sec. 26, T. 9 N., R. 99 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 44 to 47 degrees F., and mean summer soil temperature ranges from 61 to 67 degrees F. The moisture control section is moist in all parts for 45 or more consecutive days immediately following April 1 and is dry in all parts for 75 or more consecutive days immediately following July 1. The soil is typically calcareous to the surface, but in some pedons is noncalcareous as deep as 10 inches. The particle-size control section ranges from 0 to 15 percent rock fragments. The control section averages 18 to 35 percent clay, 25 to 55 percent silt, and 20 to 55 percent sand. Some pedons contain up to 10 percent gypsum crystals in masses and seams.
The A horizons have a hue of 2.5Y through 7.5YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 2 through 4. Reaction is mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
The C horizons have hue of 2.5Y through 7.5YR, value of 5 through 7 dry, 4 through 6 moist, and chroma of 2 through 4. Reaction is mildly alkaline through strongly alkaline. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam, or clay loam.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Diaflats (CO), Garsid (T)(WY), and Monte (CO) series. Diaflats soils have a lithic contact above 40 inches. Garsid soils have a paralithic contact at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. Monte soils are not dry in all parts of the moisture control section for 75 or more consecutive days immediately following July 1.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Talamantes soils are on alluvial fans, toe slopes, and foot slopes. Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. The soil formed in alluvium derived from sedimentary rocks. Elevation ranges from 6,000 to 7,200 feet. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 9 to 11 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 42 to 45 degrees F. The frost-free period is about 75 to 95 days. July is the driest month during the growing season.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Kandaly, Langspring, Ruedloff, Sandwash, and Tresano soils. Kandaly soils have a sandy particle-size control section. Langspring and Sandwash soils have calcic horizons. Ruedloff and Tresano soils have argillic horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to moderate runoff; moderate to moderately slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation consists of Indian ricegrass, western wheatgrass, thickspike wheatgrass, Wyoming big sagebrush, Nuttall saltbush, and shadscale.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: These soils occur in northwestern Colorado. The series is of moderate extent. Total area is about 20,000 acres.

REMARKS: The diagnostic horizon recognized in this pedon is the ochric epipedon - the zone from 0 to 3 inches. Last updated by the state 12/90.
The superactive cation exchange activity class was added in 03/2003 to the taxonomic classification by the National Soil Survey Center on request of the Lakewood MLRA office, without review of the soil series property data. The remainder of this document has not been updated.
