TEBAY SERIES

The Tebay series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in a thin mantle of loess over glacial till. Tebay soils are on drumlins, moraines, and undulating glacial till plains. Slopes range from 0 to 30 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 26 degrees F. and the average annual precipitation is about 12 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive Typic Haplocryepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Tebay silt loam - on a 2 percent slope under white spruce and quaking aspen forest at 1600 feet elevation. When described the soil was moist.

Oi--4 inches to 0; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) fibrous moss, twigs, and root fibers; abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

A--0 to 1 inch; black (10YR 2/1) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine, fine, and medium roots; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick)

Bw--1 to 4 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few medium, distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) mottles; common fine and medium, few coarse roots; neutral (pH 6.8); diffuse irregular boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

2BC--4 to 8 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam with common medium distinct dark brown (10YR 3/3) patches of silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and medium, few coarse roots; 5 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.2); diffuse irregular boundary. (0 to 5 inches thick)

2C1--8 to 13 inches; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) mottles; few fine and medium roots; 10 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 20 inches thick)

2C2--13 to 47 inches; olive gray (5Y 4/2) and dark gray (5Y 4/1) fine sandy loam; massive; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; 10 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); gradual smooth boundary. (8 to 25 inches thick)

2C3--47 to 60 inches; olive gray (5Y 4/2) fine sandy loam; massive; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; 15 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8).

TYPE LOCATION: Copper River Area, Alaska; 8 miles south of Copper Center; 1800 feet north and 2000 feet east of the SW corner of section 24, T.1N., R.1W., Copper River Meridian.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 32 to 35 degrees F. Thickness of the fibrous organic mat ranges from 2 to 5 inches. Solum thickness ranges from 3 to 8 inches. Texture of the control section includes fine sandy loam, loam, and sandy loam. There is less than 18 percent clay in the control section. Coarse fragment content ranges from 0 to 30 percent. The soil is slightly acid or neutral in the solum and neutral or slightly alkaline in the substratum.

The A horizon has moist hue of 7.5YR or 10YR; moist value of 2 or 3, and moist chroma of 1, 2, or 3. Texture is mucky silt loam, silt loam or silt. In some pedons, this horizon has patches and strata of organic material, but the average organic matter content does not exceed 12 percent.

The Bw horizon has hue of 5YR, 7.5YR or 10YR; moist value from 3 through 5; and moist chroma of 3 or 4. Texture is silt loam, silt, fine sandy loam, or loam. In some pedons, this horizon has strata of organic material, but the average organic matter content does not exceed 12 percent. Coarse fragment content ranges from 0 to 25 percent with 0 to 25 percent gravel and 0 to 10 percent cobble.

The 2C horizons have hue of 10YR, 2.5Y or 5Y; moist value of 3 or 4; and moist chroma of 1 or 2. Textures include loam, fine sandy loam, and sandy loam. Mottles with moist hue of 7.5YR or 10YR are common in this horizon. Coarse fragment content ranges from 5 to 30 percent with 5 to 30 percent gravel and 0 to 10 percent cobble. Tonguing and interfingering of the upper horizons is common.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Progress, Eska, Ganhona, Kalambach, Mine, Sambrito, Southpaw, Steese, and Tsana series. Progress, Eska, Kalambach and Sambrito soils have solums thicker than 8 inches. Ganhona soils have stratified textures. Mine soils have mean annual summer soil temperatures warmer than 35 degrees. Steese soils have a paralithic contact between 20 and 40 inches. Tsana soils lack mottles in the substratum.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Tebay soils formed in glacial till and associated outwash covered with a thin mantle of loess. Tebay soils are on drumlins, moraines, and undulating till plains. Slopes are convex and range from 0 to 30 percent.

The climate is subarctic continental with long, cold winters and short, warm winters. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 8 to 17 inches, and the mean annual snowfall ranges from 39 to 68 inches. Mean January temperature is minus 10 degrees F., mean July temperature is 56 degrees F., and the mean annual temperature ranges from 23 to 27 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Mendeltna, Pippin, and Tolsona soils. Mendeltna soils are shallow to permafrost, poorly drained, and are on lacustrine terraces. Pippin soils are gravelly, somewhat excessively drained and occur as localized outwash deposits within glacial till plains. Tolsona soils are shallow to permafrost, poorly drained, and are on till plains and in depressions between moraines.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; runoff is slow to rapid; permeability is moderate.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Tebay soils have native vegetation of aspen and white spruce. The successional state of vegetation in a given area is closely related to the fire history. Primarily used for wildlife habitat.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Copper River Basin. The series is extensive.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: WASILLA, ALASKA

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Copper River Area, Alaska. 1986.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this profile include: a cambic horizon from 1 to 4 inches; coarse-loamy material from 10 to 40 inches; cryic temperature regime.
