TYPE LOCATION: Albany County, Wyoming; 1,500 feet west, 350 feet south of the NE corner of sec. 26, T. 20 N., R. 75 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 42 to 47 degrees F., and the mean summer soil temperature is 59 to 63 degrees F. Depth to the base of the natric horizon is 14 to 27 inches. Calcium carbonate content is less than 15 percent. Gypsum, if present, is less than 2 percent by weight. Coarse fragment content is 0 to 10 percent pebbles throughout. EC is variable but the A and Bt horizons are usually less than 2 mmhos, and lower horizons range from .5 to 4 mmhos in Bk and C horizons and up to 10 mmhos in Bkz horizons.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR through 5YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, and chroma of 3 or 4 dry. Texture is sandy loam or sandy clay loam. An E horizon is present in some pedons.
The Bt horizon has hue of 5YR through 10YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, and chroma of 3 through 6 dry and moist. Texture is sandy clay loam or clay loam. The reaction is mildly or moderately alkaline
The Btn and Btnk horizons have hue 5YR through 10YR, value of 5 through 7 dry and 4 through 6 moist, and chroma of 3 or 4 dry and moist. Texture is commonly sandy clay loam or clay loam but the range includes loam. Clay ranges from 20 to 35 percent and contains 15 to 40 percent exchangeable sodium. The reaction is strongly alkaline or very strongly alkaline.
The Bkz horizon has chroma of 3 or 4 dry. Texture is commonly sandy clay loam or loam, but the range includes clay loam. Reaction ranges from moderately alkaline through very strongly alkaline.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Archin, Bullock, Parchin, Rominell, and Tisworth series. Archin soils have E horizons and medium acid through mildly alkaline Bt horizons. Bullock and Parchin soils have bedrock at 20 to 40 inches. Rominell soils do not have Bk horizons. Tisworth soils have moderately through very strongly alkaline A horizons and do not have a nonsodic Bt horizon above a Btn.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Tismid soils are on fan terraces, alluvial flats, cuesta dipslopes, and fan aprons. These soils formed in alluvium derived from sodic shales. Elevations range from 6,800 to 7,500 feet. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 10 to 14 inches. The mean annual temperature ranges from 40 to 45 degrees F. The frost-free period is estimated to be 85 to 110 days depending upon elevation, aspect, and drainage.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Absher, Alcova, Kiltabar, and Rock River soils. Absher soils have more than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section. Alcova soils do not have natric horizons and have loamy-skeletal material within 40 inches. Kiltabar soils are undeveloped or weakly developed soils with salic horizons. Rock River soils do not have natric horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is greasewood, inland saltgrass, alkali sacaton, and western wheatgrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Wyoming. This series is of moderate extent.
