TYPE LOCATION: Siskiyou County, California, about 7 miles southwest of Weed, about 3,200 feet south and 520 feet east of the NW corner of sec. 25, T.41N., R.6W. About one mile south of the crossing of Eddy Creek. At road cut on east (uphill) side of old logging road.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum and depth to bedrock ranges from 40 to 60 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 40 to 47 degrees F. The soil, from a depth of about 7 inches to 21 inches, is usually moist in some part for 45 or more days from January 1 to April 1. It is dry in all parts for 45 to 90 days from July 1 to September 30 in most years.
The A horizon has dry color of 10YR 4/2, 4/3, 5/2, 5/4, 6/3, 7/4 or 2.5Y 7/2 and moist color of 10YR 3/2, 3/3, 4/3, 4/4; 7.5YR 3/4; 2.5Y 4/2 or 4/4. Moist values of 3 or less are restricted to the upper 3 inches. It is loam or heavy loam, with 15 to 25 percent clay modified by 35 to 55 percent rock fragments which may be pebbles, cobbles or stones.
The Bt horizon has dry color of 10YR 4/6, 4/4, 6/4; 2.5Y 5/4, 6/4, or 6/3 and moist color of 10YR 4/3, 4/4, 3/4, 4/2 or 2.5Y 4/4. It is sandy clay loam or clay loam and has 22 to 35 percent clay modified by 35 to 60 percent rock fragments. It is neutral or mildly alkaline and has greater than 75 percent base saturation by sum of cations. Some pedons have a C horizon.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Konokti and Ipish series in other families. Konokti soils are in a loamy-skeletal, mixed, mesic family and they are less than 40 inches deep to bedrock. Ipish soils are in a fine-loamy, mesic family and the upper 4 inches of the surface horizon has a color value, moist, of less than 3.5.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Toadlake soils are on uplands. Slopes range from 10 to 70 percent. The soil formed in material weathered from serpentinized ultramafic rock. Elevations are 5,300 to 6,400 feet. Rock outcrop ranges from 2 to 5 percent. The climate is subhumid with warm dry summers and cool moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 30 to 50 inches. Snowfall is 15 to 27 inches. Mean annual temperature is 37 to 44 degrees F.; mean January temperature is about 28 degrees F.; mean July temperature is about 63 degrees F. Frost-free season averages about 80 to 150 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the soils of the proposed Gozem and Dewmine families. Soils of the Gozem family lack argillic horizons and they are less than 20 inches deep to bedrock. Soils of the Dewmine family have mollic epipedons, are less than 20 inches deep to bedrock and they are in a clayey-skeletal family.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to rapid runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Limited timber production, wildlife and range. Dominant vegetation is open stands of Jeffrey pine, incense-cedar, Douglas-fir, greenleaf manzanita, huckleberry oak, bunchgrass and scattered forbs.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Klamath Mountains of northern California and southern Oregon. The soils of this series are not extensive. Their total acreage is about 12,500 acres.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California
