TYPICAL PEDON: Toccoa sandy loam - pastureland. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 30 centimeters (0 to 12 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) sandy loam; weak medium granular structure; very friable; many fine and few medium roots; common fine flakes of mica; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 17 inches thick)

C1--30 to 56 centimeters (12 to 22 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) loam; massive; very friable; few fine and medium roots; common fine flakes of mica; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

C2--56 to 89 centimeters (22 to 35 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loam; massive; very friable; common fine flakes of mica; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

C3--89 to 127 centimeters (35 to 50 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) loam; massive; very friable; common fine flakes of mica; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

C4--127 to 157 centimeters (50 to 62 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) loamy sand; single grained; loose; common fine flakes of mica; moderately acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Rutherford County, North Carolina; about 6.3 miles southwest of Rutherfordton on N.C. Highway 108, about 1,400 feet south, in pasture; at an elevation of 760 feet; USGS Pea Ridge, NC topographic quadrangle; lat. 35 degrees 19 minutes 32 seconds N. and long. 82 degrees 01 minute 42 seconds W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to seasonal high water table: 76 to 152 centimeters (about 30 to 60 inches), November to April
Depth to strongly gleyed horizons: Greater than 100 centimeters (about 40 inches) to horizons with matrix color (moist) that have chroma of 2 or less
Depth to lithologic discontinuity (contrasting sand sizes): 100 to 200 centimeters or more (about 40 to 80 inches)
Rock fragment content: 0 to 5 percent, by volume; up to 60 percent in individual subhorizons in the lower part
Soil Reaction: strongly acid to moderately acid, unless limed; some part in the control section is moderately acid or slightly acid
Mica content: 1 to 30 percent, by volume mica flakes in the A and C horizons
Other Soil Features: Bedding planes and thin strata of sandy or loamy texture occur throughout the C horizon

Texture-- sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or loam, or is stratified with loamy and sandy textures. Below 1 meter (40 inches) (fine-earth fraction) it is variable, including loamy sand, loamy fine sand, sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam, clay loam, silt loam or silty clay loam.

Ab horizon (where present):
Color--hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 5, chroma of 2 to 4

C horizon (where present):
Color--hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 to 6, chroma of 3 to 8
Texture-- sandy loam or fine sandy loam, or is stratified with loamy and sandy textures

Cg horizon (where present):
Color--hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 1 or 2, or is neutral with value of 4 to 8
Texture (fine-earth fraction)--Variable, including loamy sand, loamy fine sand, sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam, clay loam, silt loam or silty clay loam.

COMPETING SERIES:
Madill soils--do not contain flakes of mica

Wehadkee soils--are in a fine-loamy family and are poorly drained
On adjacent stream terraces:
Altavista soils--are in a fine-loamy family and have an argillic horizon
