TOTZ SERIES

The Totz series consists of shallow, somewhat excessively drained soils on mountains. Permeability is rapid. These soils formed in sandy residuum. Slopes range from 20 to 55 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 53 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 54 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Mesic, coated Lithic Quartzipsamments

TYPICAL PEDON: Totz fine sandy loam - on a 25 percent smooth south- facing slope at an elevation of 2,820 feet in a scarlet oak, chestnut oak, red maple, and pitch pine forest. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Oi--0 to 1 inches; leaves, roots, and twigs.

A--1 to 3 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; 5 percent gravel; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

AB--3 to 8 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; 5 percent gravel; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 6 inches thick)

Bw--8 to 14 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) loamy fine sand; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; common fine roots; 5 percent gravel; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary.

BC--14 to 19 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) loamy fine sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few fine roots; 10 percent gravel; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of B horizon is 3 to 16 inches.)

R--19 inches; sandstone bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: Harlan County, Kentucky; 3,750 feet east-northeast of Jacks Gap and 30 feet south of the Little Shepherd Trail; about 1.6 miles east of Pine Mountain Settlement School; Nolansburg quadrangle; Latitude 36:57:04N, Longitude 83:09:11W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and depth to bedrock is 10 to 20 inches. Rock fragments, mostly gravel, make up 0 to 35 percent of the soil. Reaction is extremely acid to strongly acid throughout.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 1 to 4. The fine-earth is loamy sand, loamy fine sand, sandy loam, or fine sandy loam.

The AB horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 3 to 6. The fine-earth is fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loamy fine sand, or loamy sand.

The Bw horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 8. The fine-earth is loamy fine sand or loamy sand.

The BC horizon has color and texture ranges like the Bw horizon.

Some pedons have a C horizon with color and texture ranges like the Bw horizon.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family. Weikert and Ramsey soils are shallow soils in closely related families. Weikert soils have a cambic horizon and are loamy-skeletal. Ramsey soils have a cambic horizon and are loamy.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Totz soils are on mountains and commonly occur near areas of rock outcrop. Slopes range from 20 to 55 percent. These soils formed in sandy residuum from Mississipian and lower Pennsylvanian clastics. Elevation ranges from about 600 to 3,500 feet. Mean annual temperature ranges from 48 to 57 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 43 to 55 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Alticrest, Helechawa, Shelocta, and Varilla soils. Alticrest soils are coarse-loamy and moderately deep. Helechawa, Shelocta, and Varilla soils are deep.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained. Runoff is medium. Permeability is rapid.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are in forest with mixed stands of Virginia pine, pitch pine, scarlet oak, red maple, chestnut oak, and hickories.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Totz soils are in the Allegheny-Cumberland Plateau of eastern Kentucky and possibly similar areas in Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The series is estimated to be of moderate extent, about 7,000 acres.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Morgantown, West Virginia

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Harlan County, Kentucky, 1989.

REMARKS: Totz soils were previously mapped as Ramsey soils.

Diagnostic horizons recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - 1 to 8 inches (A and AB horizons).

ADDITIONAL DATA: Reference samples S88KY-095-1 (typical pedon) and S88KY-013-1.

2/2022 revision: Oi had 1 to 0 inch depths, corrected to be 0 to 1 in horizon depths then added 1 inch to all horizon depths throughout the typical pedon. wjn
