COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Tregoning soils are on marine terraces. Slopes are 0 to 15 percent. Elevations range from 40 to 250 feet. The soil formed in eolian sands. The climate is humid with cool foggy summers and cool moist winters. A strong marine influence limits the diurnal and annual range of temperature. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 55 inches. Mean January temperature is about 48 degrees F. Mean July temperature is about 57 degrees F., and the mean annual temperature is 53 degrees F. The frost-free period is 290 to 330 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cabrillo, Cleone, Harecreek and Heeser soils. Cabrillo soils are fine-loamy and somewhat poorly drained and lack a strongly cemented hardpan. Harecreek soils are somewhat poorly drained and lack a strongly cemented hardpan. Heeser soils are somewhat excessively drained and lack a strongly cemented hardpan.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. The soil is saturated with water for extended periods from December through April. The saturated zone starts between the depths of 10 and 30 inches and extends to the top of the hardpan. The soil is also saturated beneath the hardpan for extended periods. Surface runoff under bare soil conditions is very slow through medium. Permeability is moderately rapid above the hardpan, very slow in the hardpan and rapid below the hardpan.
USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for homesite development. Vegetation consists of Bishop pine, cypress, wax myrtle, evergreen huckleberry, rhododendron, salal and small amounts of tanoak and Douglas-fir.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern coastal California. The series is not extensive.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California
SERIES PROPOSED: Mendocino County, California, Western part, 1988.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon (with albic horizon) -- the zone from 0 to 15 inches (A1, A2, E)
Spodic horizon (ortstein -- the zone from 23 to 45 inches (Bhsm).
Aquic moisture regime -- is saturated between a depth of 10 to 30 inches and the hardpan for extended periods during the rainy season. Low chromas and mottles occur within this zone, indicating reduced conditions.
