TRUHOY SERIES

The Truhoy series consists of very shallow, well drained soils that formed in alluvium derived from mixed rocks. The Truhoy soils are on fan piedmonts. Slopes are 2 to 30 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 175 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 12 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic, shallow Cambidic Haplodurids

TYPICAL PEDON: Truhoy gravelly loamy sand--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The soil surface is covered with 45 percent gravel.

A1--0 to 5 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) gravelly loamy sand, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; no roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 30 percent gravel; noneffervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 10 cm thick)

A2--5 to 13 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, dark brown (10YR4/3) moist; moderate thin and medium platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and fine vesicular pores; l0 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 10 cm thick)

Bqk--13 to 28 cm; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; common very fine vesicular and few very fine tubular pores; 25 percent gravel, 20 percent 5 to 25 mm plates of strongly silica cemented fragments; 25 percent weakly silica cemented plates, 5 to 25 mm thick; strongly effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.5); clear wavy boundary. (10 to 18 cm thick)

2Bqkm--28 to 43 cm; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) continuous strongly silica-carbonate cemented duripan; discontinuous silica laminar cap, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; very hard, extremely firm; very few very fine to medium roots in fractures; 5 percent cobbles; strongly effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.8); clear wavy boundary. (13 to 38 cm thick)

3Bqk--43 to 152 cm ; light gray (10YR 7/2) extremely gravelly sand, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; single grain and massive; loose and very hard, loose and very firm; nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; common very fine and fine interstitial pores; 70 percent gravel; 35 percent strong to weak discontinuous silica cementation as plates and pendants; violently effervescent; very strongly alkaline (pH 9.2)

TYPE LOCATION: Mineral County, Nevada; about 700 feet north and 2,100 feet west of the southeast corner of Section 14, T. 3 N., R. 33 E.; USGS Basalt 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 38 degrees 06 minutes 44 seconds N and longitude 118 degrees 16 minutes 38 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 38.1123333 latitude, -118.2772222 longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Moist in winter and spring, dry in summer and fall except for l0 to 20 days cumulative between July and October due to convection storms; typic aridic soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 13 to 15 degrees C.
Depth to duripan: 15 to 36 cm.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.

Particle-size control section - Percent clay: l0 to l8 percent.
Rock fragments: Averages 15 to 35 percent, some horizons may have 35 to 50 percent.

A horizon
Value: 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry or moist.

Bqk horizon
Chroma: 3 or 4 dry or moist.
Texture: Sandy loam, loam or fine sandy loam; averages sandy loam.
Effervescence: Slightly effervescent to strongly effervescent.
Other features: 30 to 60 percent plates of strong to weak silica cemented material 5 to 25 mm thick.

Bqkm horizon
Value: 7 or 8 dry, 5 or 6 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry or moist.
Rock fragments: Less than 15 percent.

3Bqk horizon
Texture: Stratified coarse sand through loamy sand.
Rock fragments: 35 to 75 percent, predominantly gravel.
Reaction: Strongly alkaline to very strongly alkaline.
Structure: Massive to single grained.
Consistence: Loose to very hard.
Other features: 30 to 70 percent strong to weak discontinuous silica-carbonate cementation as plates and pendants on rock fragments.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Adelaide, Belcher, Blackhawk and Timper soils.

Adelaide soils have a buried argillic horizon and an indurated duripan within 100 cm. Belcher soils have semi-consolidated lacustrine sediments within 50 cm. Blackhawk soils lack a Bqk horizon. Timper soils lack a Bqk horizon above the duripan and have cambic horizons above the duripan that is dominantly silt loam.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Truhoy soils are on fan piedmonts. These soils formed in alluvium derived from mixed rocks. Slopes are 2 to 30 percent. Elevations are 1,646 to 1,950 meters. The climate is cool, arid with warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is 150 to 200 mm, the mean annual temperature is 10 to 12 degrees C, and the frost-free season is 120 to 150 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Wardenot and Izo series. Wardenot and Izo soils lack duripans and have over 35 percent rock fragments in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; slow to medium runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly spiny menodora, bud sagebrush, Bailey greasewood, galleta, Indian ricegrass and shadscale.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West-central Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 26.
